On 9 November 2018, Fly Jamaica Airways Flight 256, a Boeing 757 (reg. N524AT) returned to Cheddi Jagan International Airport in Guyana for an emergency landing, 45 minutes into a flight bound for Toronto.[2] During the landing, the aircraft overran the runway. The incident occurred at approximately 2:53 am. There were approximately 118 passengers and 8 crew members were on board the aircraft. The aircraft was severely damaged.[3][4][5][6] All passengers originally survived, however an 86-year old female passenger died one week after the crash due to injuries sustained during the incident.[7] Before this event, it had been about 17 years since a B757 passenger has been fatally injured in an accident, which was the crashes of American Airlines Flight 77 and United Airlines Flight 93.

Aircraft

The aircraft involved was a Boeing 757-23n, registration N524AT, powered by two Rolls-Royce RB211 engines. It was built in 1999 and first flew with ATA Airlines and then with another airline, before being acquired by Fly Jamaica in 2012. [2]

Flight details and accident

The aircraft took off from Guyana on 9 November 2018 at 2:10 a.m. local time (6:10 a.m. UTC). At 2:21 a.m., the pilot indicated there were some hydraulic problems and he requested permission to return to Cheddi Jagan International Airport. [2][8] It was noted that after spending an estimated 43 minutes in the air on the way to Toronto, the plane made an emergency landing at approximately 2:53 am which was followed by an immediate evacuation of crew and passengers.
