The Portuguesse highway system is well spread out over the country. It includes the following roads as well as many national 2 lane roads.

Auto-Estrada (Highway)

  • A1 is a north/south highway that goes from Lisbon to Porto
  • A2 is a north/south highway that goes from Lisbon to Faro
  • A3 is a north/south highway that goes from Porto to the Spanish border in the direction of Vigo
  • A4 is a east/west highway that goes from Porto to Amarante and is expected to be extended to Braganca and eventually the Spanish border
  • A5 is a east/west highway that goes from Lisbon to Cascais
  • A6 is a east/west highway that begins when the A2 makes a downward turn and goes to the Spanish border by Elvas
  • A7 is a east/west highway that goes from Vila do Conde to Vila Pouca de Aguiar
  • A8 is a north/south highway that goes from Lisbon to Leira
  • A9 is a north/south highway that goes from Oeiras to Alverca
  • A10 is a north/south highway that goes from the A9 to connect to A13
  • A11 is a north/south highway that goes from Braga to Guimaraes
  • A12 is a east/west highway that goes from Loures to Setubal
  • A13 is a north/south highway that goes from Setubal to Santarem
  • A14 is a east/west highway that goes from Coimbra to Figuera da Foz
  • A15 is a east/west highway that goes from Santarem to Peniche
  • A17 is a north/south highway that goes from Aveiro to Mira but is expected to be extended to Leira
  • A22 is a east/west highway that folows the Algarve coast through Faro
  • A23 is a L shaped highway that goes from the A1 by Torres Novas to Guarda
  • A24 is a north/south highway that goes from Viseu to Chaves and on to the Spain border
  • A25 is a east/west highway that goes from Aveiro to Vilar Formoso through Viseu & Guarda
  • A27 is a east/west highway that goes from Viana do Castelo to Ponte de Lima
  • A28 is north/south highway that goes from Porto to Viana do Castelo
  • A29 is a north/south highway that goes from Porto to Ovar but is expected to continue to hug the coast until Aveiro

  • IP1 is designated as A1&A2&A3&A22
  • IP2 is a north/south road that goes from Faro to Braganca
  • IP3 is a north south road designated partially as A10&A24 and as its self from Coimbra to Viseu
  • IP4 is partially designated as A4 and the remaining road to Braganca and Spain
  • IP5 is designated as A25
  • IP6 is designated as A23
  • IP7 is designated as A6
  • IP8 is a a east/west road that goes from Beja to Sines
  • IP9 is designated as A27
