Premise
The Duplo invaders announce their plans to destroy everyone in the Lego Universe, after Emmet and his friends have just saved the world by saving President Business from his evil spirit, and after Finn and his father convince Finn's younger sister to play with them in the basement. They attempt to make friends with the Duplo invaders, but to no avail, and the invasion of Bricksburg begins.
Five years later, the Duplo invaders have turned Bricksburg into a post-apocalyptic wasteland, which everyone now nicknames Apocalypseburg. Emmet maintains his livelihood and is completely unaffected by this dramatic change and pretends everything is still awesome, unlike everyone else, who have been toughened and hardened, making them ready for more fighting. Emmet has wanted to start something new with his life with Lucy ever since they began their relationship, particulary to concieve a family, but with the harmony that the Lego world once obtained gone, she disagrees.
Suddenly, an intergalactic invader named General Sweet Mayhem from the Systar System in outer space comes to the Earth and joins forces with the Duplo invaders to take over the Legoverse. When she kidnaps Lucy, Batman, MetalBeard, Princess Unikitty, and Benny under the orders of shape-shifter Queen Watevra Wa-Nabi of the Systar System, Emmet's Master Builder skills are put to the ultimate test. He must use them to travel to space and rescue his friends, defeat General Mayhem and Queen Watevra Wa-Nabi, and restore harmony to Bricksburg and the rest of the Lego Universe. Along the way, he meets a new friend, galaxy-defending archaeologist, cowboy and raptor trainer Rex Dangervest, and seeks help from him.
Cast
- Chris Pratt as Emmet Brickowski, an everyman, construction worker, rookie Master Builder from Bricksburg and Lucy’s new boyfriend.[8]
- Pratt also voices Rex Dangervest, a galaxy-defending archaeologist, cowboy and raptor trainer. The character is a spoof of Peter Quill / Star-Lord from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Owen Grady from Jurassic World, and Joshua Faraday from the 2016 remake of The Magnificent Seven, all of which were also played by Pratt, and also a reference to rumors that Pratt would play Indiana Jones.[9]
- Elizabeth Banks as Lucy / Wyldstyle, a Master Builder, who is Emmet’s girlfriend and Batman's ex-girlfriend.[8]
- Tiffany Haddish as Queen Watevra Wa-Nabi, the shape-shifting alien queen of the Systar System.[8]
- Will Arnett as Bruce Wayne / Batman, a DC Comics superhero who is a Master Builder and Lucy's ex-boyfriend.[8]

- Alison Brie as Princess Unikitty / Ultrakatty, a Master Builder who is a unicorn-horned cat. In this film, instead of turning red when angry, she is red altogether. Over the years since the first film, she has developed the ability to become a giant robotic version of herself when a battle is about to occur.[12]
- Nick Offerman as MetalBeard, a Master Builder who is a large bionic robot pirate with a severed head after he lost his original body in an earlier encounter with Lord Business's forces.[8]
- Maya Rudolph has been cast in an unspecified role.[13]

- Gal Gadot as Diana Prince / Wonder Woman, a DC Comics superhero who is an embassador of the Amazon people as well as a Master Builder. Gadot reprises her role from Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Wonder Woman and Justice League. She replaces Cobie Smulders who previously voiced the character in The Lego Movie.[16]
Production
Before the critical acclaim and success of The Lego Movie, plans for a sequel had been set in motion. On February 3, 2014, Jared Stern was hired to write the sequel, along with Michelle Morgan.[17] On March 12, 2014, Deadline reported that animation co-director Chris McKay would direct the sequel with Phil Lord and Christopher Miller as producers.[18] On April 10, 2014, it was reported that McKay wanted to have more women in the sequel than men.[19] On July 28, 2014, it was reported that Chris Pratt wants to return to reprise his role as Emmet. It was also reported that Will Arnett might return to reprise his role as Batman, but had not decided yet.[20]
In October 2014, Warner Bros. scheduled The Lego Batman Movie for 2017, and The Lego Movie 2 for May 25, 2018.[21][22] On October 25, 2014, it was reported that Lord and Miller had signed on to write The Lego Movie 2.[23] On October 30, it was announced that Australia-based animation studio Animal Logic was in talks to produce the next three Lego films (though the deal was not finalized at the time) and the New South Wales government would make financial contributions to all the films.[24] On November 12, during an interview with BBC News, Lord and Miller revealed that there would be more female characters featured in the film.[25]
On February 24, 2015, the sequel was titled The Lego Movie Sequel and Rob Schrab was announced as the film's director, replacing McKay as director as he was scheduled to direct The Lego Batman Movie instead.[26] By February 2017, Schrab had been replaced by Mike Mitchell, reportedly due to "creative differences".[6] Production started in Canada on October 2, 2017.[1][2]
On March 23, 2018, it was reported that Tiffany Haddish had been cast in the film to voice a new lead character, while returning actors would be Pratt as Emmet, Elizabeth Banks as Wyldstyle, Arnett as Batman, Channing Tatum as Superman, and Jonah Hill as Green Lantern.[8] On May 21, 2018, Warner Bros. officially renamed the film The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part along with releasing the first teaser image of the logo.[27][28] Stephanie Beatriz and Arturo Castro were announced to be part of the film on June 4, 2018.[10] In November 2018, Maya Rudolph joined the cast.
Release
The film is scheduled to be theatrically released in the United States on February 8, 2019. It was originally scheduled to be released on May 26, 2017, as of May 2015, but the release date was later moved to May 18, 2018.[29][30] On June 17, 2016, it was pushed back again to its current release date.[31] The film was originally titled The Lego Movie Sequel before it was officially renamed The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part in May 2018.[32]

On June 4, 2018, the first poster was released along with an announcement that the first trailer would be released the following day.[33] On August 1, 2018, Turkish Airlines and Warner Bros. released a special safety video featuring characters from the franchise.[34] The second trailer was released on November 20, 2018, along with the second poster.[35] On Black Friday 2018, Warner Bros. released The Lego Movie on YouTube in its entirety for one day only, with a trailer for The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part attached.[36]
A video game based on the film, titled The Lego Movie 2 Videogame, a direct sequel to The Lego Movie Videogame, was announced on November 27, 2018 and will be released on February 26, 2019, two weeks after the film's release, for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, and for the Nintendo Switch a month later on March 26.
On December 10, 2018, Warner Bros. released a short film, titled Emmet's Holiday Party, as a Christmas styled promotion for the film.[37][38]
