Writing Career
Aanchal Malhotra's debut book, 'Remnants of a Separation : A History of the Partition through Material Memory' was published by HarperCollins India in 2017, to mark the 70th anniversary of Indian independence, and rose to critical acclaim. The project (under the same name) initially began as her MFA dissertation at Concordia University, Montréal, and includes field research in India, Pakistan and England. It is a unique attempt to revisit the Partition through personal and intimate objects that refugees carried with them across the border. Written as a crossover between history and anthropology, it is the first and only book detailing the material culture of the Partition of India. [2]
It was shortlisted for the Shakti Bhatt First Book Award, the Kamaladevi Chattopadhyay NIF Book Prize, the Hindu Lit for Life Non Fiction Prize, the Publishing Next Printed Book of the Year, and longlisted for the Tata Literature Live! First Book Award, and Oxford Book Cover Prize . It is also a A Hindustan Times ‘India @ 70’ book.[3]
Malhotra's debut book is due to be published by Hurst Publishers in the UK in March 2019, under the title, 'Remnants of Partition : 21 Objects from a Continent Divided'[1]
