Manakin-Sabot, consisting of the villages of Manakin and Sabot, is an unincorporated community in Goochland County, Virginia, United States.[2][3] It is located northwest of Richmond and is part of the Greater Richmond region.
This was an area of settlement by French Huguenot refugees in 1700, who had come from London, after fleeing religious persecution in France. Originally they had expected to settle in Jamestown, but the leader of the settlement forced them up above the falls on the James River. They were urban people and struggled to survive on the frontier.
Ben Dover, Dover Slave Quarter Complex, Huguenot Memorial Chapel and Monument, Oak Grove, Powell's Tavern, Rochambeau Farm, and Tuckahoe Plantation are sites listed on the National Register of Historic Places.[4]
Justin Verlander, professional baseball player, was raised in Manakin-Sabot. He was the 2011 Cy Young Award winner, 2011 American League MVP, 2006 American League Rookie of the Year, and pitcher for the 2017 World Series champion Houston Astros.
