Hartselle is a city located in Morgan County, Alabama. As of the 2000 census, the population of the city is 12,019.

Hartselle is located at 34°26'25" North, 86°56'25" West (34.440383, -86.940385)1.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 38.5 km² (14.9 mi²). 38.5 km² (14.9 mi²) of it is land and 0.07% is water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 12,019 people, 4,816 households, and 3,534 families residing in the city. The population density is 312.3/km² (809.0/mi²). There are 5,170 housing units at an average density of 134.3/km² (348.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 92.25% White, 5.16% Black or African American, 0.63% Native American, 0.31% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.33% from other races, and 1.31% from two or more races. 1.29% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 4,816 households out of which 35.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.1% are married couples living together, 10.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.6% are non-families. 24.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.2% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.49 and the average family size is 2.97.

In the city the population is spread out with 25.5% under the age of 18, 7.7% from 18 to 24, 29.3% from 25 to 44, 23.5% from 45 to 64, and 14.0% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 92.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 88.8 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $40,461, and the median income for a family is $47,685. Males have a median income of $40,211 versus $24,124 for females. The per capita income for the city is $20,727. 8.6% of the population and 6.6% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 8.8% of those under the age of 18 and 11.9% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
