Manitoba and Northwestern Railway ...

The Manitoba and NorthWestern Railway was created as a result of the Manitoba government's struggle with the Canadian federal giovernment to break the Canadian Pacific Railway's rail monopoly in Western Canada. It was built between 1885(?) and 1890 from Portage la Prairie, MB to Yorkton (Province of Saskatchewan siince 1910, previously part of NWT), with a branch line from Binscarth, MB to Russell MB. The CPR leased the line in 1900, and has operated it ever since.
