Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Nessuno mi può giudicare (song), you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Italian music. Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Hi, I have a COI, As of now, I joined the StellaResults Team. Since I am a new user, I am being mindful of the reaching out for help. Are you available for publishing this Sandbox?Chefmikesf (talk) 17:29, 4 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Chefmikesf: I may try to merge the French and Italian sandboxes with the articles which already exist ([1][2]), but there is nothing I can do for the Japanese one, as my level is too low to even read it (。>﹏<。)

@IvanScrooge98: You got it. I will post again as soon as I have those references. Thank you!Chefmikesf (talk) 15:14, 5 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Chefmikesf: I have proofread and partially merged your stub with the main article on Italian Wikipedia. However, I could not include a few paragraphs because non-encyclopedic and likely to be removed.
@IvanScrooge98:Awesome! Is there anyway you can send me the part of the document you could not include? My team has fixed the reference issue and added References to all of the Sandboxes. @Chefmikesf: if you check the Italian sandbox, I have highlighted the parts which could not be included. Maybe look for someone else for the French Wikipedia, as I might overlook certain mistakes or even do some myself, in an attempt of correction.
@IvanScrooge98: Hello Ivan, Hope all is well with you and Happy Holidays. A few fellow editors have had a conversation regarding the highlighted content on the Bottega Veneta page. hi, i saw you removed all my contextual notes regarding the phonotactics that condition the pronunciation of sardinian sounds. besides being a hard work now deleted without any explanation/reason (you didn't worry to add any comments), it clearly impoverishes the article. are you aware of the importance regarding phonotactics in the pronunciation of sardinian? or did you just found boring the comments? Translation request

Hi, I saw your name here as a translator from Italian to English. Sorry to impose, but would you be prepared to translate this short (3 paragraph) album review from Italian to English? I've tried using machine translators, like Google Translate, but I can't make sense of the result. I want to use the English translation to expand Angels on the Edge of Time. This is not urgent, but if you're able to help, that would be great! Thanks. —Bruce1eetalk 08:38, 12 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Bruce1ee: hello! This is fine, as soon as I have some free time to translate it, I’ll get the job done.

IPA translitteration of fileja

Hello, I just wrote a quick stub on a Calabrian pasta called Fileja. As you know, "j" isn't really used in Italian and the pronunciation in this case is that of a "y", I guess. Thing is, I think this is an important information but have no idea how to use the phonetic alphabet. Can you help? Thanks!

Elcor, Minnesota

Hello, IvanScrooge98!

Would you have any interest in translating the Featured Article Elcor, Minnesota for the Italian Wikipedia? Since many of the immigrants who settled here were from Italy, I think having the article translated in this language is important, especially for any relatives of former residents who may be looking for information about the town. Thanks! DrGregMN (talk) 13:27, 14 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Traduzione Ita-Eng

Ciao!

--Samu204c (talk) 14:50, 25 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Castel Gandolfo

Hi IvanScrooge98, I was reading the article about Castel Gandolfo and noticed that the italian phonetic transcription is rendered as [ka'stɛl ɡan'dɔlfo]. As far as I know, stress marker should be placed before the lowest voice level element, in this case it should be [kas'tɛl] and not [ka'stɛl]. My idea is also supported by the italian pronounciation dictionary called DIPI, see here: DIPI Castel Gandolfo. I'm asking to you as I saw that you was the user who moved the stress marker a couple of years ago, even adding the DIPI as source... and this puzzled me. Is the current version really correct? Thanks in advance. 79.51.99.20 (talk) 05:09, 4 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@79.51.99.20: stress mark should go right before the stressed syllable, and since according to Italian syllabification the second syllable is ·stel, I decided to move it; neither of the two forms is absolutely wrong, though: it’s just for consistency reasons. When I add pronunciation reference it is usually about other things, such as syntactic gemination or vowel openness.
However I just noticed someone cut my references away.
Oh, OK, now I understand, I thought it was a mistake. Is this a decision taken after a discussion? Is there a place where these kind of matters is discussed?
On this specific argument I have to say that I find this approach a bit unusual. Have you got some authoritative sources that adopt this same approach? 79.51.99.20 (talk) 18:39, 4 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I didn’t discuss it as it was not in my opinion fundamental to move that symbol; I simply thought it would fit better the Italian hyphenation, which some dictionaries do when transcribing loanwords as well (e.g. bistrot /biˈstro/). I’m pretty sure there’s no specific place where to discuss pronunciation transcriptions on Wikipedia, you may just do it on the page’s talk.
Thank's a lot Ivan for your kind answers. I didn't want to discuss or criticize... on the contrary, discussions sometimes are good opportunities to learn something new... :-) Thank's again, 79.51.99.20 (talk) 19:35, 4 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Transliterating Arabic

Dear Ivan, the transliteration of Arabic used in Modern Standard Arabic is the Library of Congress standard and is used consistently in the whole article. It uses á for ى. There are never ending quarrels about which standard to use. Others that use your preferred ā use ǧ for ج which is reviled by some who see no benefit of using a diacriticized letter for what they consider a standard pronunciation of /dʒ/, which is not standard in Egypt, /ɡ/. There are more examples. We just can't use parts of each transliteration scheme, otherwise people would do whatever they want and the transliteration would confuse non-speakers. Thanks. --Mahmudmasri (talk) 21:14, 12 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Mahmudmasri: oh gosh so sorry, just thought it was a mistake. I’d better double-check it next time.

Provocations

Hi IvanScrooge98, I see that there is a troll that is repeatedly reverting you edits concerning syntactic gemination. I just want to advise you to keep calm and don't let you get involved in edit wars, as the only purpose of that troll is to get you blocked. Thus, consider to stop reverting him and, on the contrary, consider asking an opinion of an administrator and present your undisputable sources that justify your edits. Long consonants in Swedish

Are you sure that your transcriptions of long consonants in Swedish are correct? This, for instance, doesn't sound like a long [lː] but a short [l]. I think you should slow down with the changes and make sure that your edit is correct before publishing it.

The same goes for the secondary stress - are you sure that all those syllables have it?

Also, do you check the phonetic realization of /rl/ before posting the IPA? It can be [ɭ], [rl] or [l], depending on the word - see Swedish phonology#Sonorants.

As far as Finland Swedish transcriptions are concerned - they should all be corrected to Central Standard Swedish. FS is definitely not a neutral variety. Kbb2 (ex. Mr KEBAB) (talk) 10:49, 30 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Kbb2: yes, I have to admit I sometimes add long consonants and secondary stress tentatively and/or according to what I can hear in the few things I find online (for example, regarding your last edit on Sundsvall, that’s definitely geminate for me). The problem is, I only try to have a more consistent usage of the length marker, which is sometimes used, sometimes not even when a consonant is clearly long. I’m sorry for any mistakes I’ve made, maybe we could work on that together?
So far, all -rl- instances I have encountered have been retroflex, and I have removed Finland Swedish pronunciations for which phones are not listed on the help page (I only left the one at Lotta Svärd).
Oh, also for accent 2 I only marked long consonants within words, and never at the end.
@Kbb2: so what are you going to do? For example, what accent would you have at Trollhättan? Because it sounds to me [²trɔlːˌhɛtːan] but the article has a different trascription.
You should find a reputable source, for example Tomas Riad's Phonology of Swedish) and stick to what it says. Don't rely on your hearing unless you've had extensive phonetic training in Swedish. It's not an easy language to transcribe; in fact, it's probably only slightly easier to transcribe than Danish.
We can't work on that together, I'm too incompetent.
Ok.
The length of consonants doesn't vary between words with Accent 1 and Accent 2, so I don't know what you mean by that.
I'm sorry but there's no way that either of the Forvo recordings (which, I assume, you're referring to) would sound like [²trɔlːˌhɛtːan]. August's recording sounds like [ˌtrɔlːˈhɛtːan] (which could be a slightly pedantic pronunciation, but that's just my guess), whereas pernys32's seems to pronounce it as [trɔlˈhɛtːan]. AFAIK, lengthened consonants and vowels are pretty much confined to stressed syllables, which is why I feel that I need to transcribe August's pronunciation as [ˌtrɔlːˈhɛtːan] and not [trɔlːˈhɛtːan]. IMO, mishearing a stressed syllable for a tonic syllable with secondary (not even primary) stress is a pretty serious mistake and I think that if you want to transcribe Swedish you should exercise extra caution. Remember that it's much better not to provide IPA than to provide an incorrect one. Kbb2 (ex. Mr KEBAB) (talk) 15:23, 30 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Kbb2: you’re right. Do you know any user who’s a native speaker and sufficiently familiar with IPA to help me?
@Kbb2:: however, check this and this: sound more reliable.
Ask Peter Isotalo and Maunus. There's also Xyzzyva who seems to be very knowledgeable in pronunciations of various Germanic languages. (S)he's probably your best bet.
I'm not sure how you can say that after establishing that we both (yes, both, maybe what I wrote in the previous reply was somewhat hypocritical as I was also talking to myself) seriously lack the listening skills and the knowledge needed to transcribe Swedish. Please stop the edit warring.
The author of this recording is a very accomplished speaker that has recorded thousands (almost 60000!) of Swedish pronunciations on Forvo. On what grounds would you call that pronunciation unreliable? Kbb2 (ex. Mr KEBAB) (talk) 16:53, 30 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Kbb2:: oh, thanks a lot! Anyway I’m sorry, what I mean by that is, there are more speakers who pronounce those words differently, which means that’s most likely how they should sound like in Swedish (I however agree my listening skills are not that good). Also, other articles here on Wikipedia feature transcriptions without the h that were added by other users. That’s it, I never tried to sound like I was attacking you.
Apologies accepted. I didn't feel attacked; rather, I wanted to clarify the issue. However...
Some (one fourth? one fifth?) of your recent edits seem to be wrong in some way or another. What source did you consult about the consonant length in Swedish? Because this seems to be similar to the apologize and carry on as if nothing happened tactic used by LoveVanPersie. It almost got him banned.
Please refrain from transcribing Swedish until you're absolutely sure about what you're doing. You seem to just hope that your edits are correct and if they aren't, someone will just fix them for you. That's not how Wikipedia should work. Do you remember how angry you got at anons who keep removing syntactic gemination from IPA transcriptions of Italian? That, more or less, is how frustrating it will be to correct your mistakes in Swedish transcription for whoever will choose to do so. Kbb2 (ex. Mr KEBAB) (talk) 19:23, 30 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Kbb2: once I start something, I tend to go all the way through it even if I know it may be wrong; it’s a terrible flaw of mine. Though I never revert anything that is unarguably properly sourced (which has been done against be multiple times), you are absolutely right: I will try not to add things I can’t find actual sources about or I am not 100% sure of and leave the job to other people. Hoping the wrong transcriptions that are on this project will soon be fixed. Thank you.
Oh, I forgot, besides Forvo, I use SAOB dictionary app I have on my phone, but this is sadly often not of much help when it comes to proper names.
No problem, maybe I sounded too harsh. My apologies for that, you stopped what you were doing and I should acknowledge that. Thanks for cooperating.
Here is a free dictionary that provides pronunciation. Remember that it doesn't use IPA, so their [no:r‿d] translates into IPA [nuːɖ]. They also seem to transcribe phonetic gemination of consonants, as in gammal [²gam:al] (IPA: [²ɡamːal]). It seems to be pretty reliable and I think you can use it as a source, just don't correct the stress or tonemes by ear anymore.
There's also Hedelin's Norstedts Svenska Uttalslexikon and Garlén's Svenska Spraknamndens Uttalsordbok. They're not available online (not for free at least), but if you're serious about learning Swedish (or at least if you're planning on learning it in the future) then you should think about buying them, at least the first one. Kbb2 (ex. Mr KEBAB) (talk) 11:21, 1 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Oh yes, I stumbled across that website too! Yes, when I take up Swedish seriously I definitely will. Thank you!

Friendly warning. Pls read the heading here. Thank you. --SergeWoodzing (talk) 20:59, 31 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@SergeWoodzing: I am telling you the same thing. Those pronunciations were there since long before you removed them and I restored them.
Makes no difference how long they were there. --SergeWoodzing (talk) 21:06, 31 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@SergeWoodzing: do you realize you started the whole thing? But of course, it is me who should not edit.
I remove something not useful which clutters up the first line of an article. If you don't approve, you are supposed to open a discussion. We gain consensus. You don't revert until we have consensus. That's normal. --SergeWoodzing (talk) 21:13, 31 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
YOU say it is useless, once again.
@SergeWoodzing: and most importantly, YOU need consensus before cutting stuff away.
My friendly warning stands. --SergeWoodzing (talk) 21:21, 31 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

IPA isn't something that is objectively not useful. The fact that someone can't read it (which is probably your main argument) doesn't make it useless, it means that it's useless to that person because they can't read it.

Let's just move those transcriptions into footnotes and that should make you both happy. Kbb2 (ex. Mr KEBAB) (talk) 11:00, 1 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

But that means all transcriptions on Wikipedia would go in footnotes, which is something that should be carefully discussed for the whole project.
No, Kbb2 that's not why I find them practically useless to readers of English (try to be nice, now!). The item is a trivia item at best, possibly interesting to people with a special interst in the foreign language.
But I do agree with you whole-heartedly about footnoting them all. Thank you! --SergeWoodzing (talk) 14:10, 1 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Dark l in Catalan

Thank you very much for correcting the IPAs. When I was removing non-standard transcriptions of Catalan from WP articles back in July I didn't touch most of the instances of ɫ because I was too lazy, so thanks for doing that yourself. Kbb2 (ex. Mr KEBAB) (talk) 11:02, 9 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Kbb2: You are welcome 😁 In any case, whenever you find any, please correct them; it’ll take us less time.

Thank you very much for telling me about syntactic gemination in the edit summary when you reverted my edit to Pasta e fagioli. Thanks. As far as I am aware, Nord is still alive. So, what does this mean in our case?--87.70.97.132 (talk) 08:58, 17 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
If he is still alive, we cannot use a copyrighted photo, as a free one might reasonably become available. There's even a deletion template for such cases: {{Di-replaceable fair use}}. Double sharp (talk) 15:08, 17 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. To be fair, it is all in Russian, so, not being able to speak the language, I have no clue regarding the copyrights status. The Hebrew sources do not mention anything related to copyrights and such.--87.70.97.132 (talk) 15:21, 17 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
You can ask editors from the Russian Wikipedia for help with content written in Russian. Unless/until he dies and/or is inaccessible (like being in prison for life or something) you can ask him for a freely-licensed image or something to that effect. Thanks for the reply, though, considering what you just said, I think I will leave it as it is for the moment. BTW, current IP is--87.71.85.205 (talk) 18:57, 19 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I have a new submission at Draft:Debris documentar translated from the German-language Wikipedia (original is de:Debris Documentar and DVD cover is here). Mind having a look? Thanks again. P.S.: Do you think it:The Kingdom 2/pl:Królestwo II/sv:Riket II, being partially covered under The Kingdom (miniseries), should be translated? I am also asking this about it:Trilogia del cuore d'oro/it:USA - Terra delle opportunità (the individual films, though not the trilogies themselves, are covered under Breaking the Waves/The Idiots/Dancer in the Dark/Dogville/Manderlay/The House That Jack Built (2018 film)). And, if it is not too much trouble, would be great if you could also translate, in your free time, fr:Là-bas (film), fr:De l'autre côté (film, 2002), and fr:Sud (film, 1999). Thanks. DVD cover for all three is here.--87.71.86.87 (talk) 12:08, 26 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
As I had previously told you, I am not a reviewer, so you cannot ask me to take a look at your drafts; secondly, I think you should expand the already existing article; lastly, if and when I have time I will see what I can do with those.

Hi. Please see WP:OVERLINK. Linking to words such as Italy is a textbook example of this. Thanks. Lugnuts Fire Walk with Me 12:09, 7 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Lugnuts: alright, got it. Shouldn’t we link Italians though? Just to know.
Seems a very common term to me. I don't see other biographies linking to Americans, Germans, Greeks, etc. Lugnuts Fire Walk with Me 12:18, 7 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Scottish Gaelic phonology

I think you may be getting ahead of yourself and making sweeping changes to articles that will need to be cleaned up later. For example, innse is irregular: search [www.faclair.com] or look it up in any ScG dictionary with phonetic transcriptions. Akerbeltz is a recognized expert who has published books on the subject, so it's worth listening to him. Catrìona (talk) 17:25, 11 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Catrìona: my apologies then. Checking it out, it seems our help just marks nasal vowels as fully oral (so it would be Scottish Gaelic pronunciation: [ˈiːʃə]); otherwise, we should add the diacritic there, but Scottish Gaelic phonology says nothing about this phonetic change.
Again, that's not accurate. Words like "sàmhradh" (sãũrəɣ) are pronounced with (quasi-phonemic) nasality, and many words like dannsa /dãũ(N)sə/ are always pronounced nasally, to my knowledge (the actual n is often dropped). This is the same change that affects innse, except in the latter case the n is never pronounced. If it were not nasalized, it would be written ìse, which would be a different word. Scottish Gaelic phonology is actually quite complex; the Help page is not intended to be comprehensive, and you can't assume that the phonology page is complete. I strongly suggest that you don't have enough subject expertise to be making sweeping changes to this topic. Catrìona (talk) 23:16, 11 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Catrìona: actually, the help is supposed to be the reference to the transcriptions: if you change it or it misses something, it is going to be confusing for readers led there by the transcriptions. I added the nasal diacritic to the page, but I still have another doubt. I’ll ask about it.

An automated process has detected that when you recently edited Etymology of Aberdeen, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Balgownie (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver).

IPA changes to Francesco Zuccarelli

I don't usually pay much attention to the IPA renditions of names, but I'm kind of baffled by franˈtʃesko ddzukkaˈrɛlli; ttsuk-. What does the "ttsuk-" at the end represent? Thanks. Curiocurio (talk) 23:26, 24 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Curiocurio: we usually do that when two alternative readings such as [franˈtʃesko ttsukkaˈrɛlli] and [franˈtʃesko ddzukkaˈrɛlli] in a row would clutter too much space. Do you think it should be explained on the help page maybe?
Thanks for your simple explanation! I think it's fine, few people will notice the difference. Curiocurio (talk) 14:37, 25 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

December 2018

Information icon Hello, I'm SovalValtos. I noticed that you added or changed content in an article, Agios Nikolaos, Crete, but you didn't provide a reliable source. It's been removed and archived in the page history for now, but if you'd like to include a citation and re-add it, please do so. If you need guidance on referencing, please see the referencing for beginners tutorial, or if you think I made a mistake, you can leave me a message on my talk page. Thank you. SovalValtos (talk) 04:34, 28 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@SovalValtos: I simply changed in accordance to what is said at Help:IPA/Greek and seen at Modern Greek phonology#Sample: before voiced consonants, including nasals and at word boundaries, /s/ is realized [z]. All references are provided there.
I understand what you have done in coming to your preference for the IPA. It is what is simply called original research. On the page Agios Nikolaos, Crete there was an IPA transcription which you changed [5] to your version. A reliable source for one or other, or both transcriptions is now required as the edit has been challenged, rather than attempts to justify one alternative by referring to Wikipedia pages other than the policy which requires verifiability.SovalValtos (talk) 11:22, 28 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I am sure your edits have been done in good faith. In the source you have now proposed for Agios Nikolaos, Crete I can find no mention of Agios Nikolaos, it is more a general guide; not a source. If there is no source at present for the transcription of a particular name sometime in the future a publisher with a reputation for fact checking may want to take up an author's work on a relevant list of IPA transcriptions of names. At that point the problem would be solved. There are many such transcriptions available in reliable sources already, but not all. Meanwhile please be patient do not add unsourced IPA transcriptions. There is no hurry. Editors other than myself may be less patient and tolerant when unsourced material is replaced. Meanwhile please revert your addition of unsourced transcriptions.SovalValtos (talk) 00:43, 30 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
There is plenty of these transcriptions on Wikipedia and no one ever decided to remove them as long as they match the spelling, even when they were not actually right (for example, Italian IPAs with unsourced [e] in place of correct [ɛ]). The thing is, it’s practically impossible to find one-to-one references for every single word, or better name, if there is not a reliable pronunciation dictionary; unlike what happens for English pronunciations, a Greek name spelled Άγιος Νικόλαος can only be pronounced in one way, you can’t call that original research. Also, I have often seen IPA transcriptions whose source is an audio file.
@SovalValtos: and again, what is the point of reverting my (yes) unsourced edits to older edits which are also unsourced but are not even in accordance with the help page? Just mark it as unreferenced if you mind.
Are you of the opinion that your WP:OR is superior to another editor's?SovalValtos (talk) 18:06, 31 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@SovalValtos: I am of the opinion that a pronunciation should be in accordance with the linked help. However, I am not going to revert again, at least we don’t have an incorrect IPA.
Thank you for not going the edit war route. Please do not make further changes to IPAs where you think your version better without a reliable source to support the change. A help sheet does not suffice.SovalValtos (talk) 18:46, 31 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Translation?

Would you be willing to translate a short article on Bianca Bagnarelli into Italian? She is an up-and-coming Italian illustrator, living in Bologna, and it seems a shame to me that her article only appears in English Wikipedia. All the references are current, and two are already in Italian! ubiquity (talk) 13:45, 5 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Ubiquity: of course, just as soon as I have some time! I’m sorry for the late reply but I’ve recently been in some trouble and still might not always be able to edit promptly.

Catania's Influence on Adelaide

I thought I would bring the discussion regarding the Catania article here; I'm not saying that this information isn't valuable at all (I should not have removed the section entirely), but I don't think that it should be its own section altogether. Perhaps it could be worked into the Geography or History section? No other city articles have their influence on other city layouts in their own section, so I think their precedence should be followed. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 205.193.1.4 (talk) 19:00, 8 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

No problem, maybe I sounded too harsh. I was thinking about making it a substection, too, but I didn’t dare to place it elsewhere.
