Mark Foster Gage (born November 22, 1973) is an American architect practicing as head of his eponymous firm, Mark Foster Gage Architects, in New York City. He is also an Assistant Dean and tenured Associate Professor at the Yale University School of Architecture where he has been on the faculty since 2001.[1]

Background and education

Mark Foster Gage was born in Omaha, Nebraska in 1973. His father was a Navy helicopter pilot who served two tours in Vietnam and his mother worked in a bookstore until she later returned to school and became an employee at a credit card processing center, then later a librarian at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. Due to his father being in the Navy Mark lived in multiple cities prior to college including Omaha, Nebraska; Norfolk, Virginia; Monterrey, California; San Diego, California; Granger, Indiana, and ultimately he returned to Omaha to graduate from Westside High School in 1992. He attributes his interest in architecture to a mechanical drawing course he took at Farb Middle School in San Diego in 1985. Gage currently lives in New York City where he has been a licensed architect in the State of New York since 2004. Prior to moving to New York City Gage lived for a year in Rome, Italy and for a summer in Osaka, Japan. He holds a five-year Bachelors of Architecture degree with a second major in Art History from the University of Notre Dame (1997), and a Post-Professional Masters of Architecture degree from Yale University (2001).

Career

Mark Foster Gage is an architect, writer, and Assistant Dean at the Yale School of Architecture where his field is currently focusing on how architectural design modifies perceptions of social equality[2] [3]. Since 2002 his New York City firm, Mark Foster Gage Architects,[4][5] has combined his theoretical speculations with digital technologies and materials into projects for clients including Lady Gaga[6], Nicola Formichetti, Intel Corporation[7], Google[8], Samsung, W Hotels, MAC Cosmetics[9], Diesel[10], H&M[11], The Coachella Music Festival, and Vice Media. Gage’s design work has been exhibited in museums internationally including the Museum of Modern Art in New York City (MoMA)[12], the Museum of the Art Institute of Chicago [13], the High Museum of Art in Atlanta[14], the National Gallery of Art in Osaka,[15] the Hiroshima Museum of Contemporary Art[16], the Frac Center in Orléans[17], the Niigata Art Museum[18], the Museum of Modern Art in Saitama[19], The Franz Mayer Museum in Mexico City[20], and the Venice, Beijing, and Prague Biennials. His work has been featured in numerous architectural publications[21][22][23] [24] [25][26][27][28]as well as Vogue[29][30], Newsweek [31], Fast Company [32], Wired[33], USA Today [34], Business Insider [35], The New York Times [36], The Beijing Times [37], New York Magazine [38], Harper’s Bazaar [39], Marie Claire[40], Elle[41], Surface[42], Vice Media’s Creators Project and a recent twenty-five page feature in A+U[43]. Television coverage of his work has been produced for PBS[44], Fox[45], and MTV, and he was recently the subject of a documentary segment on the Travel Channel China’s program Go as Far as You Can which focuses on international innovators in creative fields.[46]

Gage has received recognition for his work in the form of nominations or awards from various institutions including the USA Artists Fellows Program (three-time nominee: 2011, 2014, 2018), the American Institute of Architects (recipient of an AIANY Design Award[47] and New Practices Citation), the Chernikhov International Foundation, the Ordos Foundation, The Architectural League of New York The Architectural League Prize, MoMA, and Surface Magazine which named him an “Avant Guardian of Architecture[48].” In 2013 Gage, as part of a team with fashion designer Nicola Formichetti and the branding firm Two Hustlers, received a Mashie Award for “Digital Marketing Innovators of the Year,”- awarded for the team’s advertising and related retail concepts for Diesel, which included the Gage-designed Diesel 101 store built in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Gage was appointed an “honorary founder” of the 5-D technology institute along with Paola Antonelli (Senior Curator of Design, MoMA), and Bill Viola (artist), and served on the Board of Directors for the MacDowell Colony from 2012-2017. He was recently a nominee for the Architecture Prize awarded by the American Academy of Arts and Letters.

Gage has designed projects ranging from a proposal for a 102-story residential tower in New York City,[49] to the new Live Arts Building at Bard College,[50] to a 3-d printed outfit for Lady Gaga, to a new Nicopanda-branded line of makeup products for MAC Cosmetics, sold at all MAC and Macy’s stores internationally. Gage is the architect for, and an investor in VR World - the largest virtual reality entertainment center in the Western Hemisphere, located in a new three-story, Gage-designed flagship space adjacent to the Empire State Building in New York City (4 E 34th St, New York, NY 10016)[51]. In addition to being open to the public, the space serves as an exhibition space for digital developers and a laboratory for Gage’s ongoing architectural research into technologies involving projection mapping, robotics, virtual reality, spatial social media, and physical interactivity.

To explore the theoretical and cultural aspects of his design work, Mr. Gage has, since 2001, taught graduate-level design studios and research seminars at the Yale School of Architecture where has been Chair of Admissions, Assistant Dean of Student Affairs, Assistant Dean of External Communications, and currently as Assistant Dean of Collaborative and Outside Projects where he has developed educational models that directly connect the curriculum to international corporations and institutions that provide new forms of financial, personnel, and research support. Prior to teaching at Yale, he taught at the Columbia University Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation (2001-2004)[52], The Institute for the Study of Classical Architecture (summer program 2001/2002), and chaired the think-tank on Computational Aesthetics at the Royal Danish Academy. Gage has lectured on his work, as well as his contributions to the field of architecture at universities, think-tanks, museums and other international institutions including both TED (Washington D.C.) and [3] INK (Mumbai) conferences.[53]

Gage has written on architecture, technology and aesthetic philosophy in both popular and scholarly publications including The Journal of Architectural Education [54], Volume[55], Fulcrum [56], Mole[57], ArchiStorm[58], A+U[59][60], Perspecta [61][62], Agora[63], AD/ Architectural Design[64][65], and Log[66][67], where he was also the guest editor, with Florencia Pita, of Issue #17 which focused on the subject of affect in architecture[68]. In 2015, he contributed a text on the subject of architectural identity titled “Architecture, Branding, and the Politics of Identity" to The Routledge Handbook of Architecture Design and Practice.[69] [70]

Two monographs on Mr. Gage’s work have been published: Mark Foster Gage: Projects and Provocations] (Rizzoli Press, 2018) which includes a forward by Robert A.M. Stern and an afterword by Peter Eisenman, and Thought Through Form: The Architecture of Mark Foster Gage (Tongji University Press, 2019), which will be available exclusively in Mandarin in late 2019. Gage authored the recently published book Designing Social Equality: Architecture Aesthetics and the Perception of Democracy] (Routledge, 2018) and has been the editor of three books: Aesthetics Equals Politics: New Discourses Across Art, Architecture and Philosophy (MIT Press, 2019), Aesthetic Theory: Essential Texts for Architecture and Design (Norton, 2012), and Composites, Surfaces and Software: High Performance Architecture, co-edited with Greg Lynn (Yale/Norton, 2009). Gage was also the managing editor on both The Millennium House, (Yale, 2001), and Building Cities: Towards a Civil Society and a Sustainable Environment (ArtMedia Press, 1999).
