The Complete Terry And The Pirates is a complete collection of the American comic strip, Terry and the Pirates by Milton Caniff, originally distributed in newspapers between 1934 and 1946 by the Chicago Tribune Syndicate with over 31 million readers.[1] The book collection is comprised of six hardcover volumes and was published by The Library of American Comics between 2007 and 2009. The series' first volume won the 2008 Eisner Award in the category Best Archival Collection - Project - Comic strips.[2]

Format

The volumes of the series measure 11 × 8.5 inches, (278 mm × 216 mm). The Sunday pages are reproduced in original full color alongside the daily strips in black-and-white. All the comic strips' material has been sourced from Dean Mullaney's private collection with supplement strip pages from Cartoon Research Library at Ohio State University.[1] The comic strips are arranged three black-and-white daily strips per page or one full Sunday pager a page, all in proper story sequence and dated. Introductions written by Pete Hamill, Howard Chaykin and Bruce Canwell, some of which puts the comic strip and its plot lines in historical context to what was happening in the world during its publication in newspapers.[1] Background of the strip's characters, an overview of the character cast, as well as an index. Each hardcover book has about 360 pages and comes with a dust jacket.[3][4]

Since The Complete Terry and the Pirates was the very first line of books from The Library of American Comics, there were pre-launch questions of if the publisher would be able to pull off the project at all or if the Terry series with its projected six volumes would be cancelled before its completion. Dean Mullaney, the publisher, and editor of the project had already taken this into account, being in the comic publishing business over 30 years. All the six Terry volumes had been printed all at once in order to be sure the complete collection would be available for readers, however the series would have a regular normal release schedule.[1]
