Emily Sibley Watson (May 10, 1855 - February 8, 1945) was a prominent philanthropist and patron of the arts. She is most notable for founding the Memorial Art Gallery in and the Hochstein School of Music & Dance in Rochester, New York.
Biography
Emily Sibley was born Rochester, New York in 1855 to Hiram Sibley, the co-founder and president of the Western Union Telegraph Company and Elizabeth Maria Tinker Sibley. She was the youngest of four children and one of the only two that survived past the 1860s. During the American Civil War, the Sibley family went abroad, where Sibley Watson was educated in Paris and Berlin. The family returned to the United States in 1868. [1]
