requesting second opinion

Would you mind taking a look at Singapore Stone? I requested a second opinion at WP:GAC regarding the use of block quotations. It's small article and a small point, but I wasn't sure how insistent to be or whether my preference for fewer quotations was really just a preference. Thanks. Awadewit | talk 13:12, 27 November 2007 (UTC)

Hi Eye, I think I have addressed the issues you have raised except one of the photographs, for which I have asked the original uploader to provide detailed information. When you get a chance, could you have another look?--Jackyd101 (talk) 00:04, 29 November 2007 (UTC)

Thankyou for your positive review. As a note, do you know of anywhere where there is a list of templates for pictures which sahow what they all say explicitly? I'm asking because at least one of the pictures there is an anonymous photograph from 92 years ago therefore is in the public domain, but I can't find a tag representing this. Regards--Jackyd101 (talk) 17:39, 29 November 2007 (UTC)

"Cunnan"?

Dear EyeSerene,

I have logged onto a wiki site called "Cunnan" which appears to be an extension of wikipedia as it uses all the same graphics. It is a wiki connected to the Society for Creative Anachronism, but the standards are appalling with little requiement for referencing and the information on Anglo Saxon history is usually highly inaccurate. I have cleaned up some of the egregious errors, but I do not know if it is worth it. There is no entry at all on King Edgar, they seem to think that Eric Bloodaxe killed King Eadred (it was the other way round) and the stub (they are nearly all stubs) on Edward the Exile calls him "Edward Atheling" meaning "Exile"! (which it doesn't). I think this may be giving wikipedia a bad name. Maybe there is nothing to be done, but I needed to talk. Streona 11:09, 1 December 2007 (UTC) (I wrote most of their article on Eadric Streona, but I did that on Wikipedia too)

Conservapedia

Thanks- these Cunnan people are quite harmless- I mean haven't we all wanted to run our own Medieval Kingdom somewhere in Pennsylvania? Actually it is quite pleasant creating the first articles on Eadric Streona etc., since although I did most of the Wikipedia one, it was modified from a Britannica entry from 1911, and the Cunnan one is probably the better one. I have since logged on to Conservapedia instead to help them out. How long will it be before they twig that Ann Widdicombe is not the love-child of Hattie Jaques? Merry Christmas. Humbert Roque Versace

Hi EyeSerene, I have eliminated the paragraph in the "In Memory" section which some else added because it was unsourced. Now, in regard to the last paragarph, an image of the speech, which is an official U.S. document as such P.D.(since P. R. is an American territory) has been added as a source. I was present and also honored on page 2 of the same speech. If this is not good enough then the paragraph shall be deleted. Tony the Marine (talk) 18:59, 5 December 2007 (UTC)

  • Thank you for taking care of the Versace article situation. It is always a pleasure to work with a former member of the military. We are the unsung heroes who have helped to make this country what it is. Take care my brother. Tony the Marine (talk) 04:49, 6 December 2007 (UTC)

Request

I am so glad to hear that you are a Brit. because maybe you can help me out in my quest. I would like to know what was the highest military decoration that the British Empire bestowed upon American soldiers who served in World War I. I wrote the bio of Marcelino Serna. In the Internet websites that I have found, they state that he was awarded the "British Medal of Honor" and I know that there was no such thing. That is why I would like to set the record straight.

I have some fond memories of the members of the great British Army. Once when I was in Hong Kong, some of my fellow Marines from Puerto Rico and I met a group of British soldiers and together we drank up a storm. Needless to say, without any authority, I invited them to visit our ship. The next day, I woke up with a hang over and could not remember a thing, when I was summoned by the Captain of the ship that I had the British Army visiting me. I thought to myself "Tony, you are in a world of s--t!" Well, I didn't get into trouble and I was given permission to give my newly found friends a tour of the ship (smile). GA renomination

Can you do me a favor and renominate force for GA? I don't have the time to go through the correct bullshit procedures that have been invented over the last year at GA. Thanks. ScienceApologist (talk) 19:29, 7 December 2007 (UTC)

Hi, the same guy who quick-failed force is making a stink at the talkpage and GAR again. Even though I have a master's degree in astrophysics, I cannot really understand what point he is trying to make, unless he just wants to be disruptive. It may be a language thing, but I don't know what to do about this guy's reticence. ScienceApologist (talk) 23:19, 10 December 2007 (UTC)

Re: Congrats

Heh :) Thanks. And thanks for that "French units" -> "men" change too; I spotted the units thing when the CE introduced it, and was going to change it, but promptly forgot. I'm particularly proud of Gebora, since it went from a redlink just over a month ago to FA now :)

BTW, I was thinking of asking you and Jacky for opinions on Albuera at FA. I'm still concerned that Background and Prelude to battle are too long, because of the lack of articles on the 1st and 2nd Badajoz sieges (which I will get around to writing as soon as my writer's block goes away), but I'm starting to feel tempted to give it a go anyway. Do you have any thoughts, bearing in mind I know you don't normally play in the FA arena? Carre (talk) 18:41, 10 December 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for the vote of confidence - I've asked Jacky for his opinion too. In the meantime, I went back to re-read the Albuera article, and have a bit of a problem: in the penultimate paragraph of Soult's retreat, we have "Girard's and Gazan's men fled to the rear". Considering that column was entirely V Corps, and hence entirely Girard's and Gazan's men, it didn't strike me as good writing. Can you think of a better phrasing? Ta. Carre (talk) 22:14, 10 December 2007 (UTC)
Another one of those starry userbox thingies for Albuera - just passed FAC with no problems at all, which surprised me a little. At a loss for new stuff to do now...perhaps those Badajoz sieges will get done, finally! <wanders off to find another Peninsular War article both idle and interesting enough to attract my attention :)> Thanks for the help, again and as usual. Carre (talk) 17:34, 18 December 2007 (UTC)

Re:Marcelino Serna

Thank you for your response. I also believe that it must have been the Military Medal. Take a look at the "Military decorations and awards" section in Marcelino Serna's article and tell me if you agree with the notation that I made. Tony the Marine (talk) 21:36, 10 December 2007 (UTC)

  • What I did was delete the image of the "Military Medal Ribbon" since there is no clear evidence nor source which may indicate that he was awarded said Medal. Tell me what you think of the section now.Tony the Marine (talk) 19:11, 12 December 2007 (UTC)

Hey EyeSerene, first off, thanks for giving me that third opinion. I was really stuck, because I unsure whether an article of that length and context was suitable for GA. I've left comments on the talk page, incorporating the points you and the other editor made. Thank you once again. Best, — Rudget Contributions 16:36, 14 December 2007 (UTC)

I corrected all the problems that you laid out. I was wondering if you think its worth it for me to renominate or if I should do some more stuff.--CyberGhostface (talk) 19:36, 16 December 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for your insight. I tried adding it to the LoC but my comment isn't showing up for some reason, although the request itself is.--CyberGhostface (talk) 15:02, 18 December 2007 (UTC)
Since you helped me out I thought you'd like to know that I nominated it again and its now a Good Article.--CyberGhostface (talk) 02:01, 29 January 2008 (UTC)

Happy New Year

Hi Eye,

Thank you for your kind season's greetings. I trust you had a pleasant break, no family squabbles, plenty of good food, presents and of course booze! Here's hoping that 2008 brings good health, kind fortunes and other good stuff to you and yours.

I look forward to working with you again in the coming year, and getting some more Peninsular War articles up there ready for main page! Getting fed up of Soult's campaign in Extremadura now (reading and writing about the same names over and over again!), so I think I'll do the 2nd Badajoz siege, then take a break from 1811 and move on to Vitoria, which you so kindly directed me to ;) All the sources are lined up and raring to go... Carre (talk) 15:20, 28 December 2007 (UTC)

Oops, broke your talk page ;) Or Tony's card did... one or t'other. Carre (talk) 15:25, 28 December 2007 (UTC)
Greetings from the League of Copyeditors. Your name is listed on our members page, but we are unsure how many of the people listed there are still active contributors to the League's activities. If you are still interested in participating in the work of the League, please follow the instructions at the members page to add your name to the active members list. Once you have done that, you might want to familiarise yourself with the new requests system, which has replaced the old /proofreading subpage. As the old system is now deprecated, the main efforts of the League should be to clear the substantial backlog which still exists there.
The League's services are in as high demand as ever, as evinced by the increasing backlog on our requests pages, both old and new. While FA and GA reviewers regularly praise the League's contributions to reviewed articles, we remain perennially understaffed. Fulfilling requests to polish the prose of Wikipedia's highest-profile articles is a way that editors can make a very noticeable difference to the appearance of the encyclopedia. On behalf of the League, if you do consider yourself to have left, I hope you will consider rejoining; if you consider yourself inactive, I hope you will consider returning to respond to just one request per week, or as many as you can manage. Merry Christmas and happy editing, The League of Copyeditors.

Hector Lopez GA on Hold

I am not sure what general references you want. Basically, if you look at the page of Panamanian players and then look at who played in the 50s and then look at each of their career stats you can back these statements up. I used the link to the page of Panamanian players and Lopez' career stats as refs in this section. My other responses are on the talk page.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:LOTD) 22:20, 30 January 2008 (UTC)

Help with prose

Hi Eye, I have recently written articles Glorious First of June and Atlantic campaign of May 1794 and although the latter has recently reached GA there has been some broad criticism of the prose style in these articles. I was wondering if you might be able, when you have time, to take a look and see if you can identify any problems. I'm not asking for a detailed copyedit or anything, just an overview of the problems with my prose. Any help you can give would be appreciated and if you can't then thats fine and I'll catch you later.--Jackyd101 (talk) 17:14, 1 February 2008 (UTC)

Thankyou very much, whenever you have time. Any imput you can give me would be gratefully recieved.--Jackyd101 (talk) 11:21, 2 February 2008 (UTC)
If you have the time to do a copyedit then it would be enormously appreciated, but if not thats fine, I realise its a lot of text. The main reason I was asking was that in the past my prose style has been criticised and I was wondering if you could take a look and give me some pointers as to where I was going wrong. Any improvements you can make or suggest to the article would be a great bonus. Thanks--Jackyd101 (talk) 12:45, 3 February 2008 (UTC)

Glorious First of June

'Ello again again again,

Back to Jacky's article, this sentence fragment: "The effect of such a draconian policy was devastating, beheading the fleet and removing at a stroke many of its most capable officers."...

There's a specific word for the removal of the upper echelons of a hierarchy, be it military, religious or monarchy, but I can't think of it for the life of me. That "beheading" really grates with me, but I just can't think of the proper word. Can you? Carre (talk) 22:29, 4 February 2008 (UTC)

Yeah, I did think of "decapitate", but it just didn't "taste" right, if you follow me. A rephrase is probably in order. Carre (talk) 16:07, 5 February 2008 (UTC)
A huge thankyou for all the work you put into the Glorious First of June article which has just passed FAC. The copyediting you did in preparing this article for FA standard was hugely appreciated and the article could not have reached this standard without your input. Thankyou.--Jackyd101 (talk) 00:44, 15 February 2008 (UTC)
No worries about the length of time for the Atlantic Campaign, my time on Wikipedia is limited too (writing my MA dissertation). Thankyou very much for all your hard work, it is hugely appreciated. If you ever need me to look over anything don't hesitate to ask. If its not too problematic, could you possibly give me a few pointers to writing better prose when you have the time? I notice there were a lot of changes and I hope that in the future I can produce better prose to negate the necessity for such through copyedits. In any case, many regards for what you have done over the last couple of months and all the best for the future.--Jackyd101 (talk) 21:25, 27 February 2008 (UTC)
Thankyou very much. I have no doubt that we'll work together again soon. Many regards.--Jackyd101 (talk) 08:51, 28 February 2008 (UTC)

FA-Team and first mission (MMM)

Dear EyeSerene,

Many thanks for volunteering to join the FA-Team. We now have a first mission, to help the Murder, Madness and Mayhem WikiProject improve twelve articles towards featured article status. These articles are really interesting, and the person in charge of WP:MMM is enthusiastic about our support, so this mission should be a real pleasure. Please watchlist the mission page and the WikiProject page as well as some (or all) of the twelve articles. The students contributing to these articles are all new to Wikipedia, so please be ultra-friendly towards them.

The coordinator for this mission is Wrad (talk), who may suggest further ways in which you can help. I will provide back-up. In particular, it might be useful for you to indicate which of the twelve articles interest you most (or which ones you are watchlisting) on the mission page.

Thanks again for joining in. I think this will be a lot of fun for all of us, and hopefully we can make it fun for the students too and create a few more featured articles between now and April. Geometry guy 21:48, 5 February 2008 (UTC)

GA Sweeps update

This is a form message being sent out to all of the GA sweeps reviewers. Thank you for all of your dedicated work in the difficult and time-consuming task of ensuring the quality of articles within the GA project. Many reviewers have taken time out of reviewing articles at WP:GAN (this may be one factor in the expansion of the backlog), writing articles, and probably getting some sleep! I have sent this message out to update you on our current progress and to remind you to please keep up with completing your reviews and updating GARs/holds. As of March 1, 2008, we have swept 20% of the 2,808 GAs we started with. At our current progress, all of the articles will be assessed in just under three years (based on when we started). If we want to complete the sweeps sooner, we need to continue reviewing at a higher rate (consider doing one or two more reviews a week or whatever you feel comfortable with) and inviting new, experienced reviewers. If you are taking a break, focusing on GAN, writing your own GAs, or are already reviewing articles like crazy, I still want to thank you for all of your hard work and hope you are pleased about our current progress. Keep up the good work and happy editing! --Nehrams2020 (talk) 09:09, 1 March 2008 (UTC)
