The Trail of Governors is a project to place life-size bronze statues of every former Governor of South Dakota in Pierre, the state capital. As of 2018, twenty-two statues have been placed. [1] The most recent additions, in 2018, were statues of William H. McMaster, Merrell Q. Sharpe and Ralph Herseth. [2] Three more statues will be added in 2019: Samuel H. Elrod, Archie M. Gubbrud and Dennis Daugaard. [3] Sculptors who have created statues for the project include John Lopez, James Van Nuys, James Michael Maher, Lee Leuning and Sherry Treeby.[4]
