9-1-1 is an American procedural drama television series created by Ryan Murphy,[2] Brad Falchuk and Tim Minear for the Fox Broadcasting Company. The series follows the lives of Los Angeles first responders: police officers, paramedics, firefighters and dispatchers.

The series premiered on January 3, 2018.[3][1] 9-1-1 is a joint production between Reamworks, Ryan Murphy Television, and 20th Century Fox Television and syndicated by 20th Television. In March 2019, Fox renewed the series for a third season.[4]

In May 2019, Fox ordered a spin-off series titled 9-1-1: Lone Star that will star Rob Lowe, is set to premiere on January 19, 2020 during the 2019–20 TV season.[5][6]

Meanwhile, Buck gets a surprise visit from his sister, Maddie (Jennifer Love Hewitt) who is hiding from her abusive husband. Also, Athena questions her relationship with Bobby. Then, at the fire station, a handsome new firefighter, Eddie (Ryan Guzman), jeopardizes Buck's chances of being chosen for a fireman calendar. At the end of the episode, Los Angeles is hit by a large earthquake.

Upon graduating, she is assigned to Firehouse 118 and immediately begins getting bullied by the crew and especially Captain Gerrard due to her gender, race, and sexual orientation. She meets Chimney there and begins a friendship. Later on, Hen begins to stand up for herself and the crew rallies around her and gets the Captain fired for his actions.

The man is later revealed to be Maddie’s abusive ex-husband who has tracked her down, leaving her and Chimney’s life in the balance. In the end, Bobby proposes marriage to Athena and she says yes.

Bobby meets Athena’s parents with an icy reception, as Athena's mother does not accept their engagement. Athena deals with a difficult situation when she discovers that a mistaken 911 call is actually a boy who was kidnapped 6 years ago. Maddie attempts to put her relationship forward with Chimney by filing for divorce from her abusive husband only to discover that he had left the city. In the end, Doug stabs Chimney in the stomach several times before attacking Maddie.

This episode is set in 2005, when Chimney is eager to become an entrepreneur but fails. Chimney receives an icy reception at first, until his friend perishes while on duty. The episode ends back to the present with Chimney, unconscious and bleeding out.

At a reststop Maddie attempts to flee, but Doug catches her and kills the storeowner. Maddie left a clue behind which Athena and Buck find. Maddie manages to convince Doug to drive into cabin, where Maddie manages to flee with a poker. Doug gives chase, but Maddie then decides to take a stand and kills Doug in self-defence, but she is injured. Athena and Buck have tracked Maddie to the cabin and they find her. Maddie is overjoyed to hear Chimney is alive and they meet at the hospital, where Maddie kisses him.

The episode is set in 2014, while living in Minnesota, Nash is devastated when he discovers that all of his family had perished in an out of control fire in their apartment. Consumed with grief, Nash is suspended from the fire department when he becomes more alcoholic and his forced to go to AA meetings. Nash then transfers to the Los Angeles fire department station 118 as the new Captain. His arrival is met with an icy reception as Nash’s power gets the better of him with firing one of his own men for insubordination. Later on, Nash begins to get used to his new family and living in Los Angeles. The episode ends back in the present with Nash being interviewed by the board with his career hanging in the balance.

Meanwhile, Maddie gets a call from a girl whose brother is contemplating suicide, this leads Maddie to consider quitting as 911 Operator but she sees people whose lives she changed and decides to stay. Also, Bobby and Athena spend more time together and a bomb is discovered on TV.

Athena and Bobby continue to investigate the serial bomber who is terrorizing Los Angeles. Things take a dramatic turn when another package is left on Athena’s doorstep, prompting the two to figure out that the bomber's motive is revenge on first responders. Later on, Firehouse 118 becomes the latest target injuring everyone on board. The bomber is revealed to be the teenager whose father destroyed their restaurant at a previous call. Bobby puts himself in harm's way to stop him and is hailed a hero and returns as Captain. Meanwhile, Buck breaks his leg from the bombing and is asked to consider a different job if he doesn’t fully heal. Following his wife’s death, Eddie is forced to make a decision whether to stay in Los Angeles or move back to Texas. Hen and her wife consider another adoption. The episode ends with Bobby and Athena getting married.

Production

Development

The series is produced by 20th Century Fox Television, with Murphy, Falchuk, Minear and Bradley Buecker as executive producers. Minear also serves as showrunner and Buecker directed the premiere episode.[47] On January 16, 2018, Fox renewed the series for an eighteen-episode second season.[48][49] The second season premiered with a special episode on Sunday, September 23, 2018, at 8 p.m. EDT; the second episode aired in the series's regular 9 p.m. EDT time slot on Monday, September 24, 2018.[50] On March 25, 2019, Fox renewed the series for a third season.[4]

Casting

In October 2017, Connie Britton, Angela Bassett, and Peter Krause joined the main cast.[47] Later that month, it was announced that Oliver Stark, Aisha Hinds, Kenneth Choi, and Rockmond Dunbar had been cast in regular roles.[51]

On May 14, 2018, it was announced that Jennifer Love Hewitt would join the main cast in season 2 as Maddie Buckley, Buck's sister and a 911 operator.[8] On May 23, 2018, Fox announced that Ryan Guzman would be joining the second season of the series as a new firefighter.[9] On June 4, 2018, it was announced that Corinne Massiah and Marcanthonnee Jon Reis, who play May and Harry Grant, had been promoted, from their recurring roles in season 1, to series regulars for season 2.[11]

The review aggregator web site Rotten Tomatoes reported a 70% approval rating for the first season, based on 33 reviews, with an average rating of 5.86/10. The website's critical consensus reads, "9-1-1 occasionally veers into melodrama, but is redeemed with a top-tier cast, adrenaline-pumping action, and a dash of trashy camp that pushes the show into addictive guilty pleasure territory."[78] Metacritic, which uses a weighted average, assigned a score of 60 out of 100 based on 21 critics, indicating "mixed or average reviews".[79]

On Rotten Tomatoes, the second season has an approval rating of 100%, based on 7 reviews, with an average rating of 7.75/10.[80]

Spin-off

On May 12, 2019, it was announced that a spin-off, titled 9-1-1: Lone Star, will premiere on January 19, 2020 immediately following the NFC Championship game and continue to following night, January 20, 2020.[82]
