Plot
The episode starts out with the song, "Best Day Ever."[2] Afterward, SpongeBob's "best day ever" doesn't turn out as he planned when he has to postpone his activities to help his friends with their problems. He wanted to work at the Krusty Krab, have some karate with Sandy, go jellyfishing with Patrick using his new high-tech jellyfishing net, and then go to Squidward's clarinet concert. First he ran over to the Krusty Krab, only to find that it was condemned due to a severe nematode infestation. Spongebob led them away by playing the flute on his nose, which caused them to become hypnotized and fall asleep, like the story of the Pied Piper. He then goes to Sandy's treedome for karate, but Sandy says that she is too busy with a leak in her dome that is letting water in. Spongebob fixes it with his sticky karate glove. Afterwards, he heads over to Jellyfish Fields to go jellyfishing with Patrick, but Patrick broke his net, and then broke SpongeBob's old net. Spongebob gives Patrick his brand-new net. SpongeBob meets up with Squidward, who says that he can't play in the concert because his clarinet reed is shot. SpongeBob pulls out one of his teeth to replace the reed. Finally, SpongeBob goes to Squidward's concert, but the doorman wont let him in without a ticket, which he doesn't have. He tries various methods of sneaking in such as a fake Spongebob marionette as a distraction, and cutting through the ceiling, but at last he is let in because he is on the VIP list. However, he gets in right as the concert is over. He is very mad that everything went wrong and gives a long and elaborate speech about how his Best Day Ever got ruined. But then, his friends tell him about how SpongeBob helped them with their problems out of his kindness and teach him it's not about "perfect days", it's about having friends. But to make it up to him, they hold a production in which SpongeBob preforms his song, "The Best Day Ever," to complete his real Best Day Ever with his friends by his side.[3]
Triva/Goofs
- Spongebob plays a tune on his nose to rid the Krusty Krab of nematodes. This is similar to the Pied Piper.
- When Squidward said "I suppose if you haven't fixed my clarinet, the concert would have been a bust", Sandy's tail turns white.
- This is the first time that the captions performer is not WGBH Media Access Group.
- Closed captions for this episode were typed in all capital letters; beginning early in season two, the show began using captions typed in lowercase letters, a standard practice with some shows today, as it makes the captions easier to read.
- When Best Day Ever was rebroadcasted a second time, it had credits that said The Gift of Gum indicating that these episodes are paired together.
- One scene in this episode before SpongeBob's concert shows Sandy's tail mistakenly colored white.
Marathon
This episode aired on November 10, 2006 during a 24-hour marathon, in which Patchy the Pirate counted down the top 100 SpongeBob episodes, while on a boat in the New York City harbor. Fans voted weeks prior to the marathon on an online poll. The marathon started on November 9, 2006, and ran through November 10, 2006 and ended with the network premiere of The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie. The marathon raised Nickelodeon's ratings to an average of over 6.7 million viewers and became the network's most highest-rated day ever.[1]
During the Best Day Ever marathon for 24 hours, starting at 8 p.m. on November 9. During the marathon, the logo in the right bottom corner changed from Nick, to the Nick at Nite logo. At 6:00 a.m. it went back from the "Nick at Nite" logo to the "Nick" logo. If one were to look for episode information in their cable guide during the countdown, the message "A yellow sponge lives in subterranean Bikini Bottom" would appear in the "Info" box so as not to give away the rankings.
Top 100 Episodes
Forty-three episodes will not make the countdown, as there are one hundred forty-three episodes prior to the marathon. The rankings on Turbo Nick are oddly different from the marathon order, and some have changed in the process. The Top 100 episodes are shown on the table below.
Patchy Segments
When the Best Day Ever countdown started, Patchy's hook was on his left side. After the next commercial, his hook was on the right side. It has since been relocated to his left hand. Patchy's hosting supposedly took place in real time alongside the marathon. A few times during the Best Day Ever marathon in the day, the Patchy commercials would take place at night. Some segments were shown several times. Before Squid on Strike, Patchy is seen reading a men's magazine on Jessica Alba. As Patchy reads a NYC guide book he can only remember two of the seven seas.
Patchy fell asleep at midnight and woke up at 8:00 AM, because he can't remember anything between #85, Shell of a Man (shown at midnight) and #43, Nature Pants (shown at 7:45 AM). However, in the middle of the night, Patchy woke up to announce #61, "Suds" and came up with the excuse that he was "resting his eyes". However, he was stumbling over his words in the process, showing that he was half-asleep and, ironically, skipped numbers 62-73. After that he went back to sleep.
A giant, sequined SpongeBob over New York Harbor was lowered as the #1 episode drew closer and closer, ala the famous New Years' Ball in Times Square.
Movie Premiere
Several promotional advertisements for the airing of The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie showed the film in its original widescreen aspect ratio, however, the airing of the movie at 8:00 PM EST was in a cropped fullscreen aspect ratio / Pan & Scan version of the film.
During the airing of The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie at the climax of the Best Day Ever marathon, the Nickelodeon logo changes to a semi-transparent version of The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie logo.
