Gary di Silvestri (born February 3, 1967 in Staten Island, United States[1]) is the Chief Investment Officer of Deutsche Suisse Asset Management and cross-country skier who competed for Dominica at the 2014 Winter Olympics in the 15 kilometre classical race.[2] His Olympic appearance for the tropical island country was popularized was discovered that di Silvestri and his wife Angelica di Silvestri, not native to the Caribbean Island, were gifted Dominica citizenship after donating money for medical and educational facilities.[3]
Early life and business career
Gary di Silvestri is a graduate of Monsignor Farrell High School in Staten Island, New York, where he was a member of its football and wrestling teams. He has an undergraduate degree from Georgetown University and a Masters of Business Administration from Columbia University.[4] He has had a long career in financial services and has worked in for Deutsche Suisse Asset Management in Washington, D.C.; Credit Suisse First Boston in London, England; and Morgan Stanley in both London and New York City.[5][6]
Athletic career
Gary di Silvestri competed along with his wife, Angelica, during the 2014 Games. However, neither was able to complete their respective races.[7] Gary was one of four competitors to not finish his 15 km event (there was also one non-starter). Of the four skiers who did not finish, Gary was the only one to not manage to make it to the first checkpoint (at 2.2 km).
Leading up to the 2014 Winter Olympic games, the di Silvestri's received a lot of positive press, including a piece from NBC Sports.[8] Since the couple were not native to Dominica, their participation in the games were questioned and aspects of their athletic backgrounds were questioned.[9][10] Despite the events the di Silvestri's competed in the games, representing Dominica.[8]
