John C. McColgan (December 24, 1814-February 28, 1890), also known as John H. McColgan, John N. McColgan, and John Kamanoulu, was a tailor and agriculturalist in the Kingdom of Hawaiʻi. He is best known as the biological father of Royal Court hula dancer Kini Kapahu Wilson.

Early Life

McColgan was born in County Londonderry, Ireland, United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, on December 24, 1814. He emigrated to the United States in the 1830s and, in 1849, joined the California Gold Rush. He left California for Hawaiʻi later that year due to ill health.

In Hawaii

McColgan arrived in Hawaiʻi on December 13, 1849, aboard the American ship Elizabeth Ellen. Shortly thereafter, he began work as a tailor on the Island of Oʻahu. He is credited with bringing the first sewing machines to Hawaiʻi in 1853, and later became the personal tailor of the King.

By 1873, McColgan owned a sugarcane plantation in Waiau, Oahu, on the northern shore of the Pearl Lochs in the ʻEwa district.

Personal Life

John McColgan and his Hawaiian wife Kalaʻiolele Kamanoulu had sixteen children, eight of whom survived into adulthood. Their son John Kekaua Kamanoulu, Sr. (1867-1927) -did some stuff-. He married Deborah Kamālie Pahau (d. March 12, 1923), the daughter of Alexander Kekolomoku Pahau and Mary Hale Purdy (1831-1923), at -place- on November 17, 1907. Mary Hale Purdy, also known as Mary Purdy Lamiki ʻAimoku, was a lady-in-waiting to Queen Liliʻuokalani and the biological mother of Liliʻuokalani's hānai son John ʻAimoku Dominis.

John McColgan's and Kalaʻiolele Kamanoulu's daughter Ana Kini Kapahukulaokamamalu Kuulalani McColgan Huhu (1872-1962) was a world-renown hula dancer originally trained in King Kalākaua's court. She later married Honolulu mayor John H. Wilson and became known as the honorary "First Lady of Hawaiʻi." She was also widely known in Hawaiʻi as a suffragette and advocate for women's rights.

In addition to his children with Kalaʻiolele, McColgan had at least one additional child, John Hiram McColgan, who was the adoptive grandfather of Old Hollywood actor Robert Cabal.
