Puteri Indonesia (literally translates into "Princess of Indonesia"), or also known as Miss Universe Indonesia, is a national beauty pageant in Indonesia that selects the winners to represent Indonesia in two of the Big Four major international beauty pageants; namely the Miss Universe, Miss International and minor international beauty pageant, Miss Supranational. The Puteri Indonesia pageant is traditionally held in March, as well as the celebration for International Women's Day. The president-owner of Puteri Indonesia are The Highest Royal Family of Surakarta Sunanate, Mooryati Soedibyo and Putri Kuswisnuwardhani.[2]

The pageant was established in 1992 and is considered as the oldest national beauty pageant in Indonesia, although the first Puteri Indonesia, Indira Paramarini Soediro who was crowned as Puteri Indonesia 1992 and participated in Miss ASEAN 1992. Puteri Indonesia 1996, Alya Rohali was held her title for the longest reign in the pageant history. Generally, The final coronation night of the pageant was annually broadcast on Indosiar but in 2007 and 2019 edition was broadcast on SCTV, means both of SCM Network Televisions is the official broadcaster of Puteri Indonesia.[3][4]

History

Puteri Indonesia was started to choose the winner for Miss Universe in 1995, but by 1996, the winner was forced to withdraw from competing at the Miss Universe pageant by Mrs. Tien Suharto, who was the wife of the late second president of the Republic of Indonesia, Suharto.[citation needed] Starting 2004 Puteri Indonesia winner was sent to the Miss Universe 2005 in Thailand after Suharto was overthrown.[citation needed]
