Halfway Between the Gutter and the Stars is the third studio album by Fatboy Slim. It was released in 2000 (see 2000 in music). It features Macy Gray, Ashley Slater, Bootsy Collins, Roland Clark, Jim Morrison and Roger Sanchez. The album's title is an allusion to the Oscar Wilde quote "We are all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars," a line spoken by Lord Darlington in Lady Windermere's Fan.

Frank Herbert influence

Many may have noticed in the track "Weapon of Choice" the second verse's lyrics are "Walk without rhythm, and it won't attract the worm." These words are taken from Frank Herbert's science fiction novels, Dune. In the books, when walking over the desert, Fremen avoid summoning the dangerous, large worm-like creatures by walking with oddly timed, rhythmless steps - thus averting the sandworms' attention.

Edited Version

An edited version also exists, which removes Star 69 (Due to the song's multiple use of the word "fuck"), and removes the song's reprise at the end in Song for Shelter.

Song For Shelter

In 2005-2006 in the Fatboy Slim forums and other sites there has been discussion as to if the ending for the album (Song For Shelter) was a decent ending or not. The song contains many parts from other parts of the album and even though a small amount of fans after these discussions thought it was inapropriate, many fans agree with fatboy slim that it was a most appropriate finish.
