- Whaling in Japan
- Japan resumes commercial whaling after 30 years following the country's withdrawal from the International Whaling Commission. At least 227 whales are expected to be killed through to December. (The Guardian)
Disasters and accidents
- An unidentified flying object crashes in Northern Cyprus, according to Deputy Prime Minister of Northern Cyprus Kudret Özersay. Initial findings indicate the object was either an aircraft carrying explosives or a direct missile strike. No casualties are reported. (Reuters)

- After speaking by phone with U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, Foreign Minister of Japan Taro Kono says "he hopes the meeting adds momentum to efforts toward the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula". Kono also says that Prime Minister Shinzo Abe "wants to meet Kim Jong-un to solve the issue of North Korean abductions of Japanese citizens". (Japan Today)
