"I Got Stripes" is a song co-written[2] and originally recorded by Johnny Cash.

The song was recorded by Cash on March 12, 1959[3][4] and released as a single in July[5], with "Five Feet High and Rising" (another song from the same recording session) on the opposite side.[3][4][6][7][8][9][10]

Composition

It is a "raucous prison tale". It was written by Johnny Cash and Charlie Williams, a DJ from Los Angeles and his friend. They borrowed from a song by LeadBelly titled "On a Monday".[6]
