Juan José Cañas Gutiérrez (born 17 April 1972), also known as Juanjo Cañas,[1] is a Spanish retired footballer who played as a midfielder.

He spent the majority of his career with Betis, where he played in nearly 400 competitive games over 15 seasons.

Football career

Born in Rota, Cádiz, Cañas played for Real Betis for most of his career. He made 53 first-team appearances in three seasons when the Andalusians were in Segunda División. After they were promoted, he played his first game in La Liga on 4 September 1994, in a 0–0 away draw against CD Logroñés. He subsequently played 228 La Liga games for the club, scoring ten goals.

In 2004–05, Cañas made 24 league appearances to help Betis to fourth place in the league, good enough to reach the qualifying rounds of the UEFA Champions League.[2] He also lifted the Copa del Rey as captain in 2005.

From 2006 to 2008, he appeared for CD Alcalá (also in his native region) in Segunda División B, and retired at the age of 36. Afterwards, he worked for Betis for two season as a member of their technical staff.[3]

Personal life

Cañas' nephew, José, was also a footballer and a midfielder. He too spent most of his professional career with Betis.[4]
