Tunisia is divided into 24 governorates (wilayat, sing. wilayah):

The governorates are divided into 264 "delegations" or "districts" (mutamadiyat), and further subdivided into municipalities (baladiyat),^[3] and sectors (imadats).^[4]

Tunisia has 6 regions in the entire country.^[5] Near the capital, Tunis, it is mostly semi-arid. However, in the southern regions, it is very arid due to the Saharan Desert.
