Plot

It's Halloween in Bikini Bottom, and SpongeBob has to clean the dishes in the Krusty Krab. After he finishes, he runs out of the Krusty Krab, scared of the 'Boo' sign that appeared out of nowhere in the kitchen. Mr. Krabs asks him if he wants to hear his 'annual scary story', and he does. He tells of the 'Flying Dutchman', a ghost that steals souls on Halloween. Squidward is in a Flying Dutchman costume, and scares SpongeBob saying that he'll steal his soul. SpongeBob has a reputation for being easily scared, and is nicknamed 'SpongeBob ScaredyPants'. After being scared by Patrick, he asks him for help. They make a 'Flying Dutchman' costume, but it fails to scare anyone. SpongeBob realizes that a real ghost has a round head, and he has a square one. So Patrick (with the help of a hair shaver) makes SpongeBob's head round. On the roof of the Krusty Krab where a Halloween party is taking place, they turn off all the lights (starting the episode's climax) and lower SpongeBob with a rope. The other end is tied to Patrick's waist, but a jellyfish stings him and he runs around. SpongeBob is flying around and hitting the walls and turns upside-down, and someone spots his square pants. They laugh at him, but then the real flying dutchman comes. He says the reason was because SpongeBob's costume was insulting, and takes off his costume. However, he is scared by SpongeBob, because his brain is showing, (That's how much Pat shaved off). Subsequently, eveyone runs away also. Patrick and SpongeBob went outside and Patrick said "I think it's your pink hat" and SpongeBob said "Pink hat? Oh, that's not a hat, that's my brain." Patrick screams and runs away. SpongeBob then said "Don't worry, it grows back!" and the episode finishes.

Trivia

  • It is revealed in this episode that Patrick is a skilled wood-worker.
  • This is The Flying Dutchman's first live appearance. He first appeared in "Squidward the Unfriendly Ghost" but only in the pictures that described his origin.
  • In the UK broadcast of this episode, the scene depicting Patrick cutting chunks of SpongeBob's head was cut, although it was left in on the DVD release of the episode.
  • The ghost in which SpongeBob finally transforms can be seen three times inside the Krusty Krab, right after he finishes doing the dishes. One of these three ghosts seems to have tentacles.
  • Right after SpongeBob carves the pumpkin he hides in the walk-in closet. Here we can see two more SpongeBob suits hanging, and a few pair of shoes on the floor (seven are visible).
  • Patrick makes clogs (wooden shoes) out of an old Christmas tree (in the walk-in closet) and says to SpongeBob 'step into these babies, Hans' which is a typical Dutch name. And thus perhaps the 'real' first name of the Flying Dutchman, which SpongeBob is dressing up to be.
  • Patrick finds that clogs are missing from SpongeBob's Flying Dutchman costume, while the real Flying Dutchman doesn't have any feet.
  • When the Flying Dutchman enters there is a 'bride of frankenstein' (dark hair with a white vertical stripe) character on the left, next to the bigger frankenstein. And another one appears left when the green smoke emmerges.
  • Bach's Toccata and Fugue in D minor, BWV 565 is played two times in this episode. The first time is when Patrick put his fake glasses on, and said "lets go scare somebody!"
  • This episode and "I Was a Teenage Gary" were only meant to air on or around Halloween, although they have aired in remote parts of the year. [citation needed]
  • The Ghastly Ones sang a Halloween remix of the theme song, which occasionally is broadcast on the episode and can also be seen on the Halloween DVD and heard here.
  • This is the first holiday-themed episode. There were also episodes for Valentine's Day (Valentine's Day), April Fool's Day (Fools in April), and Christmas (Christmas Who?).
