Stefan Đurić (Serbian Cyrillic: Стефан Ђурић; born 16 November 1989), better known as Rasta (Раста) is a Serbian rapper, singer-songwriter and record producer.

Life and career

Career

Đurić initially gained acclaim as a performer promoting cannabis in his songs. In 2010 he was the opening act for 50 Cent during his Belgrade concert.[1] However his first shot at mainstream success came in 2014 after his breakout single 'Kavasaki' (Kawasaki). Same year he also collaborated with Gru on the track Dugme po dugme (Button After Button). Soon his songs such as 'Cavali' (Cavalli), 'Habibi' (2015); 'Euforija' (Euphoria) and 'Hotel' (2016) went viral and he became one of the most popular club performers on the west Balkans, especially after release of critically acclaimed visual ep "Indigo", first of its kind in whole region. Entire Indigo album was produced and directed by Oneya. in 2015 alongside Oneya and Bassivity production he started label Balkaton, which signed some of the biggest up-raising names in Serbian show business and also co-wrote and produced Labilna, great commercial success by Ana Nikolić.[2] Rasta and Nikolić were also the judges on Ja imam talenat! (Serbian version of Got Talent) in 2017. Following the releases of his albums 'Indigo' and 'Don Reggaeton' on 15 September 2018, Đurić held a concert in Belgrade Arena, the biggest indoor-arena on the Balkans. The performance was described as 'spectacle' by some, while others condemned the fact that he was singing with playback and because most of the audience listening to his 'inappropriate' lyrics were from the younger generations.[3][4]

Personal life

In 2016, he married Serbian pop singer Ana Nikolić, with whom he has daughter named Tara (born 2017).[5] The couple separated following the birth of their child, then reconciled, but eventually divorced in 2018.[6][7]

In April 2017, owner of the record label 'Mascom', Slobodan Nešović accused Đurić of physically attacking him, alongside four men, due to unpaid wages of his 2012 digital release. The case went to court, followed with much media attention.[8] In March 2019, Đurić was declared not guilty.[9]

Public image

Đurić has been criticised for his stage name, linked not only to consuming cannabis, because beside wearing "fashion dreadlocks" he does not display any features of Rastafarian culture. Thus, compared to Snoop Lion (and even worse since Lion at least did convert to Rastafari), he is considered to be a "pop dread" or an insult to the Rastafarian community worldwide.
