TOLKIN & ASSOCIATES ARCHITECTURE

41 West Bellevue Drive Pasadena, California 91105 www.tolkinarchitecture.com

Tolkin & Associates is an architectural firm based in Pasadena, California, established in 1999. We have completed a wide array of project types, ranging in size from multi-block urban development projects; to restaurants and hotels; to unique single-family homes; to elegant custom furniture and refined cabinetry.

Our clients have included artists, institutions, sole proprietors and restaurateurs, municipalities and economic development agencies, private developers and large corporations. Among our projects are the Metlox Shops and Town Square mixed-use development in Manhattan Beach; Saladang Song restaurant and Petros Greek Restaurant and Lounge; the Mainplace Merced retail center and M Lofts housing in Merced, California; a photography studio for the artist Laura Parker; and the renovation and re-design of the Beverly Hills Hotel, Maison 140 with Kelly Wurstler Interior Design. We designed a dramatic new interior in the historic Colorado Theater for the Pasadena Christian Center, and designed an urban redevelopment plan and building scheme to expand the downtown Village of Claremont, California. Our current projects include multi-family housing projects in South Pasadena, Los Angeles and Pasadena, and a Bike Transit Center for the City of Pasadena which received an AIA Pasadena Foothill Chapter Honor Award. Construction is due to begin soon on a large custom home in Malibu and on the Claremont Town Square and public spaces.

Our approach to design remains consistent across this range of projects. Whether it is a piece of furniture, an urban plan, a restaurant interior, or a custom home, each design is developed through a close working relationship with the client’s needs and constraints. We see every project as unique, with its own set of questions and opportunities, each demanding its own design solution.

Our attention to design and aesthetics is always matched by our awareness of the pragmatics of building within a budget and a schedule. We have developed an expertise in construction materials and methods, and we have worked closely over time with consultants, suppliers, and builders. We find that this approach allows us to take full advantage of emerging technologies, and it also often enables us to control the costs and quality of a project.

Tolkin & Associates has been published in a variety of publications, including the New York Times, Interior Design, LA Architect and the European architecture magazine Domus. We have also been featured in Abitare, Dwell, Sunset and Better Homes and Gardens. Saladang Song was honored as a finalist for the James Beard Foundation restaurant design awards, and it received a merit award from the Los Angeles and Pasadena & Foothill chapters of the American Institute of Architects. In 2002, we were featured in Architectural Record as one of ten “vanguard” international firms.
