Pang is the third studio album by indie pop singer-songwriter and record producer Caroline Polachek. It is expected to be released sometime in late 2019 through Columbia Records as her first solo effort under her own name, following Arcadia, under Ramona Lisa[1], and Drawing the Target Around the Arrow, under CEP.

Background

After the release of Chairlift's third studio album Moth in 2016, Caroline alongside her bandmate Patrick Wimberly stated that they would be embarking on a final tour in the spring of 2017 before departing and going their separate ways. It was later revealed that the pair cited different aspirations musically; Caroline wanted to continue and embellish on her solo career, whilst Patrick wanted to produce music full-time.[2][3] During the time they were touring, Caroline released an album, entitled Drawing the Target Around the Arrow, under an acronym of her full name CEP. The project contained an eighteen track collection of instrumental pieces she recorded during Chairlift's existence between 2012 and 2016. She herself described the work as "an ear break from whatever I was working on."[4]

In 2017, she began working frequently with PC Music producers Danny L Harle and A. G. Cook after being introduced to Danny and appearing on his single "Ashes of Love" back in 2016. She also began collaborating with them in contributions with other artists, such as Superfruit and Charli XCX.[5][6] She also made a featured appearance on the Fischerspooner single "Togetherness", which was later released through their comeback 2018 album SIR. In an interview with Dazed, she revealed what it was like to work with a range of different people. She stated, "Working with different artists is always a learning experience, a new skill for the tool belt, even when it’s more about realising what doesn’t work." She elaborated, saying that she feels more in control of the things she writes and produces - "I’m ultimately the one in control, I’m the one who is filtering and controlling the palette in real time. I don’t leave it up to someone else. It’s actually more and more liberating to just get in and start making stuff."[7] Additionally, she also took part in a Calvin Klein compaign in the hashtag #MYCALVINS and produced and performed a song for the movement called "Our Music". The song was performed alongside fellow record producers Kindness and Blood Orange and singers Solange Knowles and Kelela.[8]

In 2018, Caroline shared many images of her in the studio to record material and hinted at the possibility of working on an album.[9][10] She also made a number of vocal contributions with other artists. One of the most significant being with PC Music affiliate and musician Felicita on his single "Marzipan", which was released through his debut album Hej!.[11] She also collaborated on the song "Do You Think About Us?" by The Night Game and also provided backing vocals for Blood Orange's song "Holy Will", released through his 2018 album Negro Swan.

In 2019, Caroline released the album's lead single "Door", which was the first to be released under her own name, aside from Ramona Lisa and CEP.[12] It was also accompanied by a music video, directed by Polachek herself alongside London-based artist Matt Copson. The song was revealed by a press release as “the first taste of a forthcoming, larger solo project from Caroline to be released later this year."[13] The following month, she announced that she was to release two more cuts from the album "Ocean of Tears" and "Parachute". With their release sparked the announcement of the album, under the title Pang and its scheduled release period of sometime in fall of 2019.[14] Polachek made both records with Danny L Harle, the sometime collaborator with Charli XCX and Carly Rae Jepsen. A. G. Cook also contributed production to “Ocean of Tears,” alongside Valley Girl. Of the song “Parachute,” Polachek said in a press release, “It was an incredible moment, realizing that this melody we'd written was unintentionally re-telling a dream I'd been shaken by. I went home, re-drafted the words to fit, and came back to the studio at 1am to record the vocal the same day. And that's the take we kept. From that moment on, Dan and I knew we had a lot more work to do together.”[15]
