Thacholi Meppayil Kunjhu Othenan or Mepayil Tacholi Manikoth Kovilakathu Kunji Othena Kurup (Udayana Kurup of Thacholi Manikoth House) or more popularly Thacholi Othenan was a legendary hero who is believed to have lived during 16th century in North Malabar region of Kerala, India. He is praised in the Vadakkan Pattukal (ballads of North Malabar).Kurup was just a title and not was his caste.
His father, Kottayat Kovilakath Puthuppanathu Mooppil Vazhunnor, was a Desavazhi of a small fiefdom.[1] His mother was Akkamma Uppati, a lady from renouwed chekavar tharawad at vadakara. His best friend was Thandassery Chapan, a Chekavar.
Thacholi othenan was defeated by Thevar vellan, a pulaya caste warrior from Thiruvalloor, Vadakara.
Thacholi Othenan's generations are still alive in a Thiyyar Tharawad called 'Chathoth' at Kayyanna, Kozhikode. The eldest member of the family is addressed by people as 'Chathothe Ore' which is a plural word meant to give respect.
