Biography

Education

Didier Michaud-Daniel has a degree in management from the École Supérieure de Commerce de Poitiers, and is also a graduate of INSEAD.[2]

Career

Otis

Didier Michaud-Daniel began his career at Otis in 1981 in the field of service sales. In 1991, he was named Field Operations Director for Otis France.[3] In 1992, he was promoted to the position of Director of Operations and Sales in Paris. He was appointed Deputy Managing Director of Operations in January 1998.

From September 2001 to August 2004, Michaud-Daniel was Managing Director of Otis UK and Ireland. From 2004 to 2008, he was President of the UK and Central Europe zone for Otis.[3]

During those years, he served on the Board of Trustees of Kingswood Oxford School, and on the Board of Directors of Hartford HealthCare.

In May 2008, he was named President of the Otis Elevator Company.[4]

Bureau Veritas

In March 2012, Didier Michaud-Daniel was appointed CEO of Bureau Veritas.[1]

International Growth

To further develop Bureau Veritas and better conform to international trends, he has applied American lean management approaches to improve the organization’s information systems, personnel management and operational efficiency. During his tenure at Bureau Veritas, he has also strived to encourage communication among employees, accelerate the decision-making and implementation process, and promote inclusion through the development of a voluntary diversity policy.[5]

In 2015, Michaud-Daniel crafted a strategic plan[6] to improve the company's resilience and make it more resistant to macroeconomic cycles (e.g. oil, gas, raw materials, marine). This strategy aims to involve Bureau Veritas in high-growth sectors such as food processing,[7] construction and infrastructure, the Internet of things and automobiles.[8] This diversification of activities goes hand in hand with renewed geographical balance. The company's traditional presence in France and Europe is now equally divided into three major zones: the Americas, Europe/Africa and Asia.

Michaud-Daniel has carried out a series of targeted acquisitions at Bureau Veritas, particularly in the United States, Latin America and Asia, entering new niches in keeping with his strategic plan.

In January 2015, Michaud-Daniel expanded Bureau Veritas in China. Notably, Bureau Veritas acquired Shandong Chengxin, a Chinese company specializing in advisory services for industrial infrastructure construction in the energy sector.[9] In 2017, China became the leading country for the company, in terms of both employees and turnover.[10] In April 2019, Bureau Veritas acquired Shenzhen Total-Test, a Chinese food analysis company.[11] Bureau Veritas' goal is to reach €1 billion in revenue in China by 2021.[12]

In 2017, the company announced the acquisition of Primary Integration Solution in the U.S., and thus extended its building and infrastructure activity to data centers.[13] In March 2018, the company's expansion into the U.S. construction sector continued with the acquisition of EMG.[14] Michaud-Daniel increased Bureau Veritas' growth in the U.S. with the purchase of Owen in 2019, a company specializing in building and infrastructure compliance services.[15]

Digital Strategy

Michaud-Daniel also implemented a digital strategy for the company at a global level, thus capitalizing on the benefits of new technologies in the testing, inspection and certification industry. In 2016, Bureau Veritas signed a strategic partnership agreement with Dassault Systèmes[16] to use their 3DEXPERIENCE digital platform for continuous evaluation of ships, offshore platforms and on-board equipment throughout their lifecycles.[17]

In 2017, Bureau Veritas signed a strategic alliance with Avitas Systems,[18] a GE Ventures company, for launching inspection services based on predictive data analysis (i.e. artificial intelligence) that can be applied to all industrial sectors.

In 2018, the company launched Origin, the first traceability certification based on blockchain technology, which allows consumers to track the entire trajectory of a product.[19]

A strategic partnership with Microsoft was signed in 2019 to develop artificial intelligence in its test laboratories.[20]

Business to Business to Society

In early 2018, Michaud-Daniel decided that – with two centuries of activity in the field of quality, health, safety, environmental protection and social responsibility – Bureau Veritas is a "Business to Business to Society" company. Bureau Veritas is now committed to supporting its clients in their desire for responsible progress, contributing to shaping a world of trust at their side.[21]

Tarkett

Michaud-Daniel was appointed to Tarkett's supervisory board as a member of the committee on nominations, remuneration and governance in April 2019.[22]

Personal Life

Didier Michaud-Daniel has two children.

A passionate rugby fan, he has both refereed and played the sport.[23]

Award

Didier Michaud-Daniel was named Chevalier de la Légion d'honneur in April 2014.[24]
