The WTA Tour Championships was held for the first time in 1972 in Boca Raton, Florida (USA). The winner was the American Chris Evert. In the final she beat Kerry Reid from Australia in two sets: 7-5 6-4. In 2002 19-year old Kim Clijsters was the first Belgian to win the WTA Tour Championships by beating Serena Williams in the final (7-5, 6-3). In 2003 she repeated this feat by stunning Frenchwoman Amelie Mauresmo in two short sets: 6-2 6-0.
