Nicholas Simmons (born December 18, 1999), known professionally as YBN Nahmir, is an American rapper and Actor .[2][3] He is best known for his singles "Rubbin Off the Paint" which charted and peaked at number 46 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, and "Bounce Out With That" peaking at number one on the Bubbling Under Hot 100 Singles chart.[4]

He founded the YBN collective which has artists YBN Almighty Jay and YBN Cordae along with 15 other members.[5]

Early life

Simmons was born on December 18, 1999 in Birmingham, Alabama. He was raised in a home with his mother, cousin, brother, sister, and grandfather.[6] His older brothers and cousins generally would get involved in acts of criminality which influenced Simmons growing up.[7] Simmons attended Clay-Chalkville High School though was pulled out following the success of "Rubbin Off the Paint".[8]

Simmons' interest in music started when he was fourteen years old and was gifted an Xbox 360 for Christmas.[6] Simmons began to play the video game Rock Band (which he would later use to record his first song.)[9] and eventually moved to playing Grand Theft Auto V and then started recording gameplay videos where he would generate a following on YouTube.[10] During his time playing Grand Theft Auto V, Simmons would freestyle in Xbox Live parties and alongside numerous other friends, established the Young Boss Niggas collective.[11]In 2015, a close friend of his, YBN Valley, died of a heart attack, leaving Simmons depressed.

Simmons after the Grand Theft Auto V popularity began to fade, found interest in San Andreas Multiplayer. A niche 2006 modification for the 2004 game, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. Most notably, he'd connect daily to the serious text-based roleplay server Los Santos Roleplay. Under the forum name FOEVERZ, his forum posts would be a way for him to share his music to the Los Santos Roleplay community. Similar with his freestyles on Xbox, Simmons would roleplay gangster-like characters and use his alternative and roleplay persona to share his raps. His videos include him: rapping about the virtual life of Los Santos Roleplay, and the hardships of the hood.

Before producing his own music, Simmons would listen to rap group "Sob x Rbe" out of Vallejo California and credits getting his west coast style from them along withe many other rappers out of California.

Career

YBN Nahmir in April 2017 at the age of 17.

Simmons formed the hip hop collective YBN (an acronym for Young Boss Niggas) in Birmingham, Alabama in 2014 composed by him, YBN Almighty Jay, YBN Cordae, YBN Glizzy, YBN Manny, YBN Walker YBN Seylonne,.[12]

Simmons uploaded his first song onto YouTube when he was fifteen with fellow YBN member, YBN Almighty Jay. The song, titled "Hood Mentality" was uploaded on March 21, 2015 to barely any reception.[11][13] Simmons uploaded several more songs to YouTube before releasing his first mixtape on January 2, 2017 titled Believe In The Glo on Soundcloud.[14] Simmons uploaded his second mixtape to SoundCloud on January 21, 2017.[15] The first song that Simmons released that got above fifty thousand Soundcloud plays was titled "Why" and according to Simmons, was partly due to being a diss track to numerous Birmingham rappers.[7]

Simmons released "Rubbin Off the Paint" on September 18, 2017 to WorldStarHipHop's YouTube channel.[16] The song quickly went viral with Simmons explaining it as "blowing up overnight."[17] After the success of the song, Simmons was pulled out of school due to his exceptional popularity and forced to start online classes.[6] The song debuted at 79 on the Billboard Hot 100[18] and peaked at 46.[19]

In November 2017, Simmons was involved in controversy following his song being claimed by a record label after his manager sold the instrumental for the song to a third-party.[20] In response, Simmons now has an in-house producer for his instrumentals who is a member of the YBN collective.[6] Simmons released six more tracks in 2017.

On January 23, 2018, Simmons released "Bounce Out With That" on Lyrical Lemonade's YouTube channel.[21] The song wasn't available on streaming services for up to three days after the release of the music video. The song has accumulated over 128 million views on YouTube after its release.[22]

In April 2018, Simmons signed with Atlantic Records.[23] He was later named as one of the members of XXL's "2018 Freshman Class" on June 12, 2018, competing in a cypher with Stefflon Don and Wifisfuneral.[24]

On July 13, 2018 Simmons announced via Twitter he will do a Tour in Europe in the fall 2018 with YBN Almighty Jay and YBN Cordae.[25] They will visit France, Germany, Poland, Sweden and more.[26] The collective YBN released YBN: The Mixtape in 2018 with Gucci Mane, MGK and Lil Skies, between others.[27][28]

On 22 March 2019 he released "Baby 8".[29] On 10 June 2019 he released a 1 minute and 10 seconds video called "Opp Stoppa".[30]

Musical style

Simmons lists his main influences as rappers from the San Francisco Bay Area such as E-40.[11] Talking on his influences in an interview with Billboard, Simmons stated that the lack of mainstream rappers from Birmingham made him listen to more artists from the West Coast such as Eazy-E and Tupac.[31][32]

The Fader has compared Simmons' style to that of Bay Area rappers, saying that his rap flow and slang are influenced and sound similar to artists from the San Francisco Bay Area.[6] Talking on his style, Simmons said "I'm not a mumble rapper either. I speak the facts. Lil Uzi Vert and Playboi Carti speak that party hot-shit. It's that Atlanta type of style. My sound is inventive."[33] Nahmir is now at the point in his career where he has his own style. At the time of Nahmirs arrival into the music industry he would be compared to 16 year old rapper Tay-k47. With their baby faced looks and violent lyrics along with a nice catchy "Playboi Carti" "Pierre Bourne" type beat they seemed to create their own little style. Nahmir however broke away from the comparisons when he would drop tracks like "No Relations" and "Bounce Out With That". They seemed to have a westcoast bouncy type vibe to them yet with Nahmirs own style. Nahmir would heavily influence many new artist coming out now and alot more new artist are starting to sound like him. 17 year old rapper out of Arizona "Fof Jabril" is compared to Nahmir with his west coast style and has a very similar flow pattern.

Personal life

Simmons currently lives in Los Angeles, California.[31] Speaking on his high school education, Simmons says that following his withdrawal from traditional high school, he has since fallen behind in his online classes but he still plans to graduate.[8] He graduated from Clay-Chalkville High School in Clay, Alabama in May 2018.[34]
