Mount Buller (37°08′S 146°25′E / 37.133°S 146.417°E / -37.133; 146.417) is a town in Victoria, Australia 150 km from Melbourne on the slopes of Mount Buller (elevation 1805 metres AHD).[1] Primarily a resort town, Mount Buller is popular with snowsports enthusiasts in winter due to its close location to Melbourne.

Mt Buller Village

The town with a population of 2933 has around 7000 beds available in accommodation facilities, the most of any Victorian ski resort.

La Trobe University has a minor campus at Mt Buller. The campus facilities include a public cinema, gym and indoor sporting facilities.[2]

Mt Buller is also the home of the National Alpine Museum.

Mt Buller Ski Resort

The ski area around the town has a network of 25 lifts, capable of moving more than 40,000 people per hour - the highest capacity in Victoria. The highest lifted point is 1780 m at Grimus Chairlift and the base altitude is 1375 m at the Chalet Creek loading station on the Horse Hill chairlift / gondola. The lifts are owned by Groset, a part of the Grollo group of companies.[3]

Before 1984, Mt Buller was serviced by two lift companies that involved the skier needing to purchase 2 lift tickets to fully ski the whole mountain. In 1984, the two lift companies eventually merged to create on lift company that allowed the skiers to ski the whole mountain with one ticket and eliminating the confusion. Today, Mt Buller is serviced by 25 different kinds of lifts covering a wide range of different terrain. In 1998, with the ever increasing amount of visitors, the ski resort resorted to building a new quad lift called Wombat Lift on the skiers right of Little Buller spur to relieve the traffic on Federation triple Lift. The most recent addition to the lift network to solve over crowding is the construction of the Northside quad lift in 2005 (marked Emirates lift on the trail map due to sponsorship deals). The next lift to be constructed would most likely to be the removal of Blue Bullet 1 and 2 and replace it with a more efficient detachable lift with possible higher capacity due to the aging of the current lift.

There are around 80 km of groomed trails spread over 263 hectares of terrain. 25% is beginner terrain, 45% intermediate and 30% advanced. There are also 9 km of cross-country trails accessible from the village. These trails also connect Mt Buller with Mount Stirling. Australia's first resort-wide wireless internet service is available in the village, operated by technology company Snowsports interactive.

Mt Buller hosts two International Ski Federation Aerial Skiing World Cup events every year in September. Every Year Mt Buller also hosts the Victorian Snowsports Championships, which has with over 3000 competitors.

The area between Mount Buller and Mount Stirling is the primary catchment for the Delatite River.
