En Esur was a site of human occupation in the southern Levant that became a major city in the region 5,000 years ago. Archaeologists announced its discovery in 2019, alongside a 7,000 year old temple that was a part of the city.[1] En Esur is located in what is now Haifa district in northern Israel.[1]

Discovery

Before its discovery was publicly announced, En Esur was excavated by professional and volunteer archaeologists over two and a half years. The work was organized in part by the Israel Antiquities Authority.[1]

Site

En Esur occupied a space of 160 acres and may have had 6,000 inhabitants, making it much larger than Megiddo and Jericho in southern Israel, but smaller than cities in Egypt and Mesopotamia.[1]
