Since the inauguration of Nobel Prize in 1901, till 2019 only three Bengali persons and one Bengali Origin person -- Four in all, have won this award. The first Bengali to be awarded the Nobel Prize in 1913, was Rabindranath Tagore (born in British India, now India), in literature. Later in 1998, Amartya Sen (born in British India, now India) in Economics, in 2006 Muhammad Yunus (born in British India, now Bangladesh) in Peace, and in 2019 Abhijit Banerjee (born in India to Marathi mother - Nirmala and Bengali father - Dipak Banerjee), won this award in Economics. 12 more Bengali persons have been nominated.


List of nominees

The following is a list of Nobel Prize nominees who have never won. Taslima Nasrin is the only Bangladeshi nominated and the first woman whereas Mahashweta Devi is the most nominated woman (3). Meghnad Saha was the most nominated (7) but failed to win ever. Bengalis received the highest number of nominations between 1936 and 1940s, at least once in these five consecutive years. The number of multiple nominations by a person in the same year is given in the bracket.
