ISO/IEC 15504, also known as SPICE (Software Process Improvement and Capability Determination), is a model for software process improvement based primarily on Capability Maturity Model (CMM) and Bootstrap [Woda and Schynoll 1992]. It was first drafted in 1998 as ISO/IEC TR 15504, and then subsequently published as a full international standard ISO/IEC 15504 during 2003-2006 as a five-part standard under the general title Information Technology — Process Assessment.

It consists of the following parts:

  • Part 1 - Concepts and vocabulary
  • Part 2 - Performing an assessment
  • Part 3 - Guidance on performing an assessment
  • Part 4 - Guidance on use for process improvement and process capability determination
  • Part 5 - An exemplar process assessment model
