Bavel is a Middle Eastern restaurant in the Arts District neighborhood of Los Angeles, California. It opened in 2018 to critical acclaim by critics such as Jonathan Gold, Bon Appetit, and the Los Angeles Times who named it 2019 Restaurant of the Year.[1]

Bavel was founded by Israeli-American chef Ori Menashe and his American wife, chef Genevieve Gergis, who are also the founders and owners of the restaurant Bestia in Downtown LA, which serves Italian food.

Etymology

The name Bavel comes from the Hebrew word for Babel, the biblical city of excess mentioned in the Torah (Hebrew Bible).

Background

After opening Bestia in 2008, Menashe and Gergis decided they wanted to open a restaurant influenced by the Israeli cuisine enjoyed by Menashe, who grew up in Israel.[citation needed]

Bavel is particularly renowned for its hummus.[citation needed]

Reception

Bavel has enjoyed a positive reception from restaurant critics both in Los Angeles and nationally, earning praise from The Los Angeles Times, Bon Appetit, Eater, Food & Wine, and The New York Times.[2]

Honors

Bavel was nominated for a James Beard Award for best new restaurant in the United States in 2019[3]. Bavel was named the best restaurant of the year by The Los Angeles Times. It is listed in the California version of the Michelin Guide.
