Team Trees, also known as #TeamTrees or TeamTrees, is a 2019 collaborative fundraising challenge whose goal is to plant 20 million trees by 2020. The event was started by American YouTuber MrBeast, or Jimmy Donaldson, and Mark Rober, a former NASA engineer and YouTuber. All donations go to the Arbor Day Foundation, a tree-planting organization, which pledges to plant one tree for every dollar donated. The movement is mostly supported by YouTubers.[1] The trees are planned to be planted starting in January 2020 and ending "no later than December 2022."[2][3] It has been estimated that 20 million trees would take up 180 km2 (69 sq mi) of land.[4]
Background
During the past 50 years, Arbor Day Foundation helped plant more than 350 million trees around the world.[5]
The initiative started on YouTube, Reddit, and Twitter in May 2019 when fans of MrBeast (known as Jimmy Donaldson in real life) suggested he plant 20 million trees to celebrate reaching 20 million subscribers on YouTube. Former NASA engineer and YouTuber Mark Rober partnered directly with Donaldson to help kick off the fundraiser. Donaldson uploaded a YouTube video explaining his plans, which claimed the top spot on YouTube's trending page, and numerous YouTubers have joined in on the movement.[3][6]
Every donation goes to the Arbor Day Foundation which pledges to plant one tree for every dollar. Notable YouTubers such as Rhett & Link, Marshmello, iJustine, Marques Brownlee, The Slow Mo Guys, Ninja, Simone Giertz, Jacksepticeye, Smarter Every Day, and Jeffree Star helped promote the campaign. Entrepreneurs such as Elon Musk and Jack Dorsey also donated significant amounts to the campaign.[1] Trees will be planted in national parks of the United States starting in January 2020. The goal is to have them planted "no later than December 2022".[2][3][7]
History
American entrepreneur Elon Musk, beauty YouTuber Jeffree Star, Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey, and Norwegian DJ and record producer Alan Walker donated amounts of $1 million, $50 thousand, $150 thousand, and $100 thousand respectively as of October 30, 2019.[7][8][9]
Top donors
- Shopify CEO Tobi Lutke donated 1,000,001 trees to beat Elon Musk who donated one million as a tongue-in-cheek rivalry.[10]
- Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk donated 1,000,000 trees. A heavy user of Twitter, he changed his profile picture for a picture of a tree and his username from Elon Musk to Treelon (a portemanteau of tree and Elon).
- ELF Development donated 250,000 trees.
- YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki donated 200,000 trees.[11]
- Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey donated 150,000 trees on October 30. He donated another 200,000 trees the next day.[12]
- American telecommunications company Verizon donated 100,000 trees via its Green Team.[13]
- MrBeast, the YouTuber who started the movement, donated 100,000 trees and challenged anyone to donate more. He later donated an additional 100,002 trees.
- Alan Walker responded to the challenge by donating 100,001 trees.[14]
- Shopify CTO Jean-Michel Lemieux donated 100,100 trees.[15]
