State Route 87 is a 65 mile long route that extends from Troy in Pike County to the Florida state line in Geneva County. After crossing the state line, it continues as Florida State Road 80. Other cities and towns along the route include Elba, and Samson.

The southern terminus of S.R. 87 is at the Florida state line south of Fairview. The route begins in Troy at U.S. Route 231 and passes through the city before entering the more rural areas of south, central Alabama before assuming a southern trajectory to its southern terminus.
