Arrondissements of the Gard département

In France, the chief town of an arrondissement is known as the sous-préfecture. When an arrondissement contains the préfecture (capital) of the département, that préfecture is the capital of the arrondissement, acting both as a préfecture and as a sous-préfecture. The Gard département of France has 3 arrondissements. These are:

  1. Arrondissement of Alès, (sous-préfecture: Alès) with 12 cantons and 101 communes. The population of the arrondissement was 135,735 in 1990, and was 133,761 in 1999, a decrease of 1.45%.
  2. Arrondissement of Nîmes, (préfecture of the Gard département: Nîmes) with 24 cantons and 177 communes. The population of the arrondissement was 419,077 in 1990, and was 457,769 in 1999, an increase of 9.23%.
  3. Arrondissement of Le Vigan, (sous-préfecture: Le Vigan) with 10 cantons and 75 communes. The population of the arrondissement was 30,237 in 1990, and was 31,595 in 1999, an increase of 4.49%.
