Abdul Kadar Khatri (1 April 1961 – 12 May 2019) was a prominent Indian Master Craftsman in the sector of Traditional Hand Block Printing known as Bagh Print.[5][6][7][8][9][10][11] He was the son of Ismail Sulemanji Khatri, founder of Bagh print.[12][13][14] He along with his father saved the tradition of Textile printing of Bagh from extinction and taken it to new heights. His artifacts have brought laurels to India and particular to Madhya Pradesh state from across the globe by showcasing his exceptional talent in Bagh Print in many countries.[1][15][16] His family has been working in the trade of Traditional Bagh Hand Block print since 7th century. As he began early in life, most part of his life was experienced for Bagh Print.[5]
He had keen ability to develop his own ways to bring his artworks to life through hard work and perseverance. His work was appreciated by eminent personalities like Kamaladevi Chattopadhyay, Martand Singh, Laila Tyabji, Ṛta Kapur Chishti and many more eminent personalities of India.[17][18][19][20]
Abdul Kadar Khatri experimented incorporating modernity in the wood blocks and colours in such a way that its fame and popularity could be established for a long time on the National and International level.[4]
Recognitions/honours
- National Award by Former President of India Pratibha Patil from Ministry of Textiles, Government of India at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi, India in 2005.[21][22][23]
- State Award by former Governor of Madhya Pradesh Kunwar Mahmud Ali Khan in 1991.
- Kala Nidhi Award by Haryana Tourism at Surajkund International Crafts Festival by Governor of Haryana Kaptan Singh Solanki and Governor of Chattisgarh Balram Das Tandon in 2015.[29]
- Certificate of Appreciation for Muscat Festival by Indian embassy in Muscat, Oman
- Certificate of Appreciation for International Sourcing Show Melbourne by Consulate General of India in Melbourne, Australia.
