Joseph Armstrong (born November 26, 1988), known professionally known as Joey Carbstrong, is an Australian animal rights activist. He is known for advocating for animal liberation and veganism through social media and public speaking engagements, as well as his debates on the ethics of eating meat, especially during various televised interviews.
Personal life
Joseph Armstrong was born in Adelaide, Australia.[1] He keeps information about his family private.[2] He has publicly stated that before his fame he was involved in substance abuse and crime. He spent 18 months under house arrest and later six months in an unknown prison, both for unknown convictions.[1] He became vegan after his release from prison.[1]
Regarding his past, Carbstrong has stated, "For 12 years of my life I went down the wrong track. ... As a vegan all I want is peace. Peace for humans, peace for animals and peace for the world."[3] In May 2017, he released a video to celebrate his completion of four years as a teetotaler.[1]
Animal rights advocacy
Carbstrong began his animal rights advocacy online in 2015, publishing his first video in April of that year.[4] He started his Instagram account in 2016 to further spread his animal rights advocacy using social media. Joey has been involved in street activism in Australia, Hong Kong,[5] and the United Kingdom, promoting groups such as Anonymous for the Voiceless and the Save Movement, an organization that holds vigils outside abattoirs and aims to turn the world vegan by sharing images of the animals' treatment on social media.[4][6]
In January 2018, he began a 'Vegan Prophecy UK tour', which involve protesting against multiple slaughterhouses.[1] During which he had multiple televised appearances, including on the Jeremy Vine Show,[7] This Morning,[8] and Good Morning Britain.[9] One journalist commented that he has a “Vegan” tattoo behind his ear.[10] During one televised interview, Carbstrong stated that "cheese comes from a mother who had her children taken from her, and had hands shoved in her anus and was artificially inseminated with bull semen. Probably why vegans would say that a dairy farmer is akin to a rapist. I wouldn’t call a farmer a rapist, I wouldn’t use any of those words without explaining to them the process and why they involve themselves in these types of practices."[7] He has cited fellow activist Gary Yourofsky as one of his biggest inspirations.[11] He also stated, "I believe is more offensive to actually show me the piece of animal who didn’t want to die than it is to call someone out for it.”[7]
During one protest against a slaughterhouse in Spenymoor, he stated, "Slaughterhouses are usually on the outskirts of towns and hidden away. I am sure if they had glass walls not so many people would be eating flesh. We are here to bear witness to the animals being sent to slaughter. We take their photos and show them to the public so they know where the meat they are eating comes from. These animals are individuals and they want to live. We don’t need meat to survive and we hope to make people think more about the food choices they make."[12]
Carbstrong has also commented that "We can't love animals whilst we're consuming their flesh or paying for them to go into a slaughterhouse," and that "Slaughterhouse workers are a product of a sick society who want to consume animal flesh."[6]
