Guideline and policy news

  1. G14 (new): Disambiguation pages that disambiguate only zero or one existing pages are now covered under the new G14 criterion (discussion). This is {{db-disambig}}; the text is unchanged and candidates may be found in Category:Candidates for speedy deletion as unnecessary disambiguation pages.
  2. R4 (new): Redirects in the file namespace (and no file links) that have the same name as a file or redirect at Commons are now covered under the new R4 criterion (discussion). This is {{db-redircom}}; the text is unchanged.
  3. G13 (expanded): Userspace drafts containing only the default Article Wizard text are now covered under G13 along with other drafts (discussion). Such blank drafts are now eligible after six months rather than one year, and taggers continue to use {{db-blankdraft}}.

Technical news

  • Starting on December 13, the Wikimedia Foundation security team implemented new password policy and requirements. Privileged accounts (administrators, bureaucrats, checkusers, oversighters, interface administrators, bots, edit filter managers/helpers, template editors, et al.) must have a password at least 10 characters in length. All accounts must have a password:
  1. At least 8 characters in length
  2. Not in the 100,000 most popular passwords (defined by the Password Blacklist library)
  3. Different from their username
User accounts not meeting these requirements will be prompted to update their password accordingly. More information is available on MediaWiki.org.
  • Blocked administrators may now block the administrator that blocked them. This was done to mitigate the possibility that a compromised administrator account would block all other active administrators, complementing the removal of the ability to unblock oneself outside of self-imposed blocks. A request for comment is currently in progress to determine whether the blocking policy should be updated regarding this change.
  • {{Copyvio-revdel}} now has a link to open the history with the RevDel checkboxes already filled in.

Miscellaneous

  • Accounts continue to be compromised on a regular basis. Evidence shows this is entirely due to the accounts having the same password that was used on another website that suffered a data breach. If you have ever used your current password on any other website, you should change it immediately.
  • Around 22% of admins have enabled two-factor authentication, up from 20% in June 2018. If you haven't already enabled it, please consider doing so. Regardless of whether you use 2FA, please practice appropriate account security by ensuring your password is secure and unique to Wikimedia.

Seven hours after I created Category:Iranian expatriate sportspeople by country of residence as part of a series, you tagged it[1] as WP:C1.

It will be populated today, and then the tag will need to be removed.

Well, I work off of the Database Report for Empty Categories, BrownHairedGirl, and so far the main problems that have arisen have been with 2019 categories that have not been populated yet. I'll remove the misplaced tag from yesterday. My apologies. Liz Read! Talk! 20:12, 2 January 2019 (UTC)

The database report is a good place to start. However, I suggest not tagging cats which are less than a day or two old. Plenty of editors create cats in batches, and then populate them later.
Also, if the newly-created 2019 cats are part of an established series, then they will usually be populated soon. So again, no point in tagging them. -BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 00:14, 3 January 2019 (UTC)
Thank you, BrownHairedGirl, I appreciate your advice. When I came back to edit WP in October, I might have done so with too much enthusiasm. That can happen when I find a task that is backlogged (there were over 1200 listed empty categories). It's all caught up now but I'll keep your advice in mind. Liz Read! Ah. I totally understand. Clearing big backlogs requires fast work, making snap decisions.
When I started work on Special:WantedCategories, it had a backlog of (IIRC) about 30,000. The only way to do it was a blitz: work v fast, with a team of us at it. I try to continually self improve myself, after what happened towards the end of that case happened I was truly sickened. I didn't know and was disgusted that I was associated with people doing those actions. Time helps too, I needed to leave and disengage. A block would have left me salty but this gave me time to make up my own mind and comes to terms with things too so I'm thankful it was only a Iban. I honestly thought of things being over-reactions more then real life common occurrences but education has shown me differently. I'm getting older (closer to 40 then 30 damn it) and in the interim I have encountered significant new health problems and my best friend was murdered, it might lead a person to make some changes and soul searching. I'll be ok however it comes down I would like to be out from under it but either way we live and hopefully learn. Hell in a Bucket (talk) 20:26, 2 January 2019 (UTC)
I'm sorry for your loss, Hell in a Bucket. I've wrestled with my own health problems that ended up providing me with an extended Wikibreak. I actually recommend breaks, I've had two, I left both times tired out from conflicts with other editors (or just the ordinary abrasiveness that is common here) and always came back refreshed and ready to get back to work. PAVA cloud CSD rejection

Hey, I saw that you rejected the speedy deletion request that I posted to PAVA cloud on the grounds that we should consider the merge first. However, the merge was proposed by me, and completed by me already, so I really don't think there's anything left to do with the merge. I don't see another welcome note unless you have removed one from your talk page. I use Twinkle (an editing tool) and Twinkle always puts welcome notices at the very top of the user talk page. I just noticed that you only registered your account a week ago and hadn't been welcomed yet. If the note irritates you, please delete it, Wallyfromdilbert. I had a link with the text "Click here to start a new topic" at the top of my talk page that I had put there shortly after creating my account. I have already moved it back to the top of my talk page above your welcome message, and I am aware that I can delete it from my own talk page. Also, the default setting in Twinkle is to place welcome messages below other content already on someone's talk page. You must have changed the default setting. Hence why I said you may want to look at the talk pages before you post so that you do not move down messages placed by the user themselves. If they have something already placed at the top of their own talk page and you want to post a welcome message, then change back to the default settings in Twinkle before posting. Just because I'm a new editor doesn't mean that I don't try to read on the policies before I do things, even if I make mistakes in some of my edits. Going through my preferences and looking at the settings is pretty basic, and I'm not quite sure why an experienced user would try to be misleading about how Twinkle works. Way to assume good faith about me though with your statement. I know that's big here especially considering you have it in your banner when others edit your talk page. Yes, I'd removed the {{empty category}} on those, because they aren't likely to be filled in a useful fashion now that the templates that filled them were actively removed. IIRC I placed the {{empty category}} on them, originally, when it was a possibility they could be filled. That is no longer the case.ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 15:24, 7 January 2019 (UTC)

Thanks for the explanation, ShakespeareFan00. This whole EmptyCat issue is one I've been thinking about because the tag is being used on over 20,000 category pages, many more than is warranted. I'm hoping to post at the Village Pump soon to get some ideas on ways to be sure the tag is being utilized correctly and when necessary. I'm reluctant to remove the tag because I've run into disagreement about it even though many of those same empty categories are still empty and are likely to remain so. An editor puts a tracking or maintenance tag and an empty cat tag on a category and it is if the decision is written in stone. I think many of these categories need to be reviewed. Liz Read! Hello, I am (as a fairly new editor) trying to expand articles relating to Israeli Music. I seen that the Yarkon Bridge Trio was previously deleted by you (to be clear: I didn't edited the deleted article and I don't know what was in the content). Of course, Daffidovic, go for it. Yarkon Bridge Trio was deleted because of A1: Very short article lacking sufficient context to identify subject of article. Here were the entire contents of the article that was deleted:

Parliament categories

Hi Liz,

Regarding categories like the one in this edit - AIUI the general practice is for these categories to be one per Parliament, not per year. Circa 1400, there were about a dozen years with two parliaments each, which complicates things a bit. The memberships are apparently often quite distinct, with (for example) only 35 of 157 members from April 1414 known to reappear in the November 1414 Parliament, so it doesn't seem to make sense to lump them together in a single category. I'm not incredibly keen on the full "Month XXXX" names but I can't think of a snappier form (early/late?)

I've just finished some work on indexing MPs for the 1300s-1400s and I'm hoping to start populating the categories in a short while (probably need to set up a bot request first, as it'll be about 2500 edits). I had recategorised a couple of the existing ones as part of the preparation work but forgotten to list the old entries for deletion.

Hope you don't mind if I roll back your changes here and list the "amalgamated" categories for deletion instead! I'll hold off doing it until tomorrow in case you have concerns. Andrew Gray (talk) 22:22, 14 January 2019 (UTC)

I see you've rolled some these changes back and listed the new categories for deletion again. As I noted, splitting these years into two for the two distinct parliaments is consistent with the way these are handled elsewhere (one cat per parliamentary term), and lumping them together when they have potentially quite distinct memberships seems arbitrary. I don't want to proceed with populating these cats until this is a bit more stable, and I'm not sure why you feel they ought to be merged - is there a category policy rule I'm missing? I'm sorry, Dolotta, I'm just seeing your message now, I don't know why I didn't get a notification of your messages yesterday. It looks like Draft:Juice Press has since been deleted but I'll review the article and restore it if I think it might clear AfC (my acceptance record is so-so but I have had a few successes). I'll look at Draft:Jennifer A Heemstra, too, but since it isn't a red link, it looks like some other editor or admin has worked on it. Draft:Juice Press had some reliable sources but the predominant editor is a now-blocked paid editor and it reads like an advertisement with a great deal of detail about its investors. Draft:Jennifer A Heemstra has some potential but it is an autobiography and it is not correctly referenced. Category:Taiwanese railway station stubs

Hi Liz, perhaps you could help. During NPP I approved between 10-25 stub articles about Taiwanese rail stations. In so doing, I tagged them as stubs. In creating the stub, I also created this cat. But I cannot populate any of the articles with this cat. Not sure what I'm doing wrong. I don't create many cats, so obviously I've screwed it up somehow. Here are a few of the stub articles which belong in the cat: Xiangshan railway station, Sanxingqiao railway station, Yutengping railway station, Yutengping railway station. Hello, onel5969,
I work with categories a lot and I've found Wikipedia:HotCat to be invaluable. It makes adding, changing and deleting categories a breeze if you know which ones you want to assign to the article. Once you click the - or + and start typing, the likely possible categories will appear and you can select the one you want. This only works with existing categories, ones that have already been created.
Do not bother with the Advanced usage instructions on the HotCat page, just look at the "How to use" section. Go to your Preferences>Gadgets>Editing and click the HotCat button. Let me know if you have any questions but it should make assigning categories much easier and faster for you. Liz Read! Talk! 02:09, 19 January 2019 (UTC)

Okay, onel5969, so you know about HotCat. I don't know why the category isn't showing up when you use that tool so I just edited those 3 pages that you mentioned and added Category:Taiwanese railway station stubs to the page and it shows up. Thank you for pointing me to that conversation, Uanfala. Some old drafts (see Draft:Shona Tucker) indicate that they are now ready to be deleted. Others, have no pink tag that says it's okay to delete and so I tag them CSD G13 which notifies the creator. Maybe the AfC submission tag should be changed. Drafts that have not been submitted to AfC do not receive a tag that states it's okay to delete them. Liz Read! Talk! 01:20, 25 January 2019 (UTC)

It's an error-tracking category. Such categories may be empty some or all the time. Ideally they will, be empty nearly all of the time ... so being empty is not grounds for deleting them.

In this case, your tagging on the category for WP:C1 was reverted by @Ymblanter, but with a note summarising some of the above ... but you deleted it anyway.

I only spotted this just now, and restored the category, adding {{Possibly empty category}}.

If you encounter empty tracking categories, please do not just speedy-delete the, especially when that speedy has been opposed.

In most cases it will be best to tag them with {{Possibly empty category}}, but it is best to check whether the template is still using the tracking category.

In the case above, the tracking cat contained a link to Template:SportsYearCatUSstate, where the documentation explicitly mentions the tracking category. I struggle to see why you thought deletion was appropriate . --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 05:28, 26 January 2019 (UTC)

I guess I took some instructions too literally. Most categories that are sometimes empty, sometimes filled, have a {{emptycat}} tag on them. If I don't see a tag, I think it's okay to delete. Just curious

so I'm told you left me a message this morning (world timely that's about 6 hours ago) couldn't find it untill i checked history. all you added was a header (aka ==Welcome==) it confused me because all of a sudden the page now has a Table of Contents. was that the intention? and How did you know it was needed? Yes, I guess it is a personal quirk of mine, Qazwiz, but I hate to see content placed above a table of contents on user and article talk pages. All you need to do is place a header on the content and the table of contents rises to the top of the page. I hope it didn't bother you.
By the way, an editor receives a notice any time anyone edits your user talk page...sometimes I have to search to find an edit and sometimes the edits are later reverted by another editor and there is no change at all to the talk page! An edit doesn't always mean that someone has left a message. You can also set your preferences regarding your notifications and either receive no notification or an email notification. Liz Read!   • Administrators who are blocked have the technical ability to block the administrator who blocked their own account. A recent request for comment has amended the blocking policy to clarify that this ability should only be used in exceptional circumstances, such as account compromises, where there is a clear and immediate need.
  • A request for comment closed with a consensus in favor of deprecating The Sun as a permissible reference, and creating an edit filter to warn users who attempt to cite it.

Technical news

  • A discussion regarding an overhaul of the format and appearance of Wikipedia:Requests for page protection is in progress (permalink). The proposed changes will make it easier to create requests for those who are not using Twinkle. The workflow for administrators at this venue will largely be unchanged. Additionally, there are plans to archive requests similar to how it is done at WP:PERM, where historical records are kept so that prior requests can more easily be searched for.

Miscellaneous

Thank you for your input. My input was very clumsy, yet not in bad faith. I hope this can be resolved as I do not with to engage in endless edit wars with BrownEyedGirl or DuncanHill. Their lack of explanation for creating and applying the categories, and reverting my deletes, pushed me into this. I hoped it could be left in some form to apply to Iron Age folk, but it and its offshoot categories may really be best deleted. They really are too fuzzy for use. Fergananim, if Wikipedia eliminated all editors who have been involved in a dispute with other editors, there would be no editors left to work on the encyclopedia! You look through my talk page archives (or those of CfD) and you'll see the times where BrownEyedGirl and I were on opposite sides of a dispute. And while we still do not also agree with each other, I have learned that BrownEyedGirl knows the ins and outs of categorization better than I do and she is (almost!) always right, as least as far as policy goes. I now believe that some of the categorization policies would be good to change but that will take a time when I have more time and energy to deal with an RfC on those matters.
The great thing about Wikipedia is that you do learn how things are done the more time you spend editing. It might be that in the future, you do come up with some appropriate and well-defined categorizations that Wikipedia doesn't already have or that work better than what we have now and this time, your changes will stick! It is an enormous list, Aurornisxui and I'm not sure about the source for the information. I've glanced at the talk page discussion and I agree with other editors that this list would be much more manageable if it was broken down into geographic areas. What I've seen in other subjects has been to come up with lists that cover the main/primary large cities, first, and then work outward towards secondary cities, and later provinces/states/counties.
The problem with this list, and why it was nominated, is that it is just so gigantic, having an entire country's churches on a single list is hard to navigate. Break it into smaller lists and it'll be easier to tackle and it won't seem so overwhelming. It will also be more satisfying as you finish one list and then move to another rather than attempting to update this list with its thousands of churches. Kudos to you for taking on this project! I tagged the draft of Shanelle Nyasiase for deletion because I created the article already as I was tired of going back and forth with an unexperienced editor who kept submitting it as a troll when it clearly wasn’t ready and would have been declined. It has to be deleted because now it’s a duplicate. Yet people over at ANI wanted to turn it into something personal and clearly not understanding what is wrong. Deletion of Nubile page?

Hi, I got a notification that the page Nubile was deleted. While I can't remember the page in detail, I was obviously involved, but now I can't see history to find out. Was it a redirect...vague memory perhaps linked to lotita, or did I change it from lolita to something like sexual attraction maybe (as lolita was not the correct context). "Term not even mentioned on target article" I suspect that would lead to a large number of redirects being deleted. Surely there will be people who search for Nubile, as I suspect I did, and while a specific page may not be extant a redirect to a similar topic is warranted? ˥ Ǝ Ʉ H Ɔ I Ɯ (talk) 06:22, 23 February 2019 (UTC)

You really think that readers will do a search for the obscure, literary term "nubile"? The page was a one line redirect to Physical attractiveness and there was no mention of what nubile was, what it referred to, much less any meaning of the word. The dictionary defn contains e.g. "2. Sexually mature and attractive. Used of young women.", the linked article 2nd line "The term often implies sexual attractiveness or desirability", which I felt was a better match than lolita, it is a back step to delete things rather than evolve/improve. Anyway...I just didn't think linking it to lolita was appropriate, so having it deleted achieves the same end. Hi Liz! You've always struck me as a decent person and I wanted to ask your advice. I hope this question isn't putting you on the spot. I recently received a BLP topic ban - I don't think it stands up to scrutiny, but that's a personal opinion and I may be interpreting policy in a strange or outright wrong way. Additionally, maybe it's for the best anyway that I stop editing. I don't really edit in areas which don't concern living people, as that doesn't interest me, and I doubt that I have a noticeably positive effect sometimes. Do you think I should appeal it or not? Well, PeterTheFourth,
I have seen few (none?) immediate topic ban appeals that have been passed. The only hope is that if there was a rogue admin who went against the opinions of every other admin participating in the discussion which I don't think happened here. There were some folks weighing in who didn't think it was a major offense but several people did.
I hope you can adjust your editing to accommodate this topic ban, which I think you could appeal in 3-6 months (without any violations). I think you have a positive effect on Wikipedia but I don't think you handled the AE complaint with enough seriousness which hurt you with the admins.
I hope you stay but, to be honest, I took two wikibreaks, one for six months and one for a year, and I came back with much more enthusiasm and energy so I don't think breaks are a bad thing. I encourage you to appeal the topic ban after a few months, when you've shown you can abide by the terms of the ban. Good luck! Liz Read! Talk! 04:00, 5 September 2019 (UTC)

Dear Liz, I am Mary I have been an intern in a chinese renowned company for months now. I was in charge of updating the profile of the company in wikipedia. Before my arrival there was already an article on wikipedia but the data were out to date. Few months after i started the updating process. the page got suspended by you. The name of the page was 'CHINT Group' and the article got deleted on August 3rd 2019. First, I have looked and looked and found no email that has been sent by you.
The article that I think you are referring to has been moved around to a lot of different titles. The pages I deleted were broken redirects...they were redirects to a page that had been deleted. I did not delete your article, just few pages (CHINT Group, CHINT Group Corp, CHINT Group Corporation) that pointed to it.
I believe that ultimately, the article that was deleted was on the page Chint Group that was deleted by admin Jimfbleak because the article was promotional and because of copyright infringement which would have happened if you, or another editor, used content that was taken from your company website or another source. Wikipedia content has to be original, written by you, not taken from other sources. If you click on Chint Group, you can see the reasons given for the deletion. Liz, thanks for ping. Usually when I delete a company article I post a COI query and guidance on the main editor's talk. The problem here is that there have been multiple SPAs (one blocked as a user name violation) and ip editors. However, I'd guess that this ip is 玛丽1218 and I've posted this guidance on her talk page. Because of the copyright violation it won't be restored as it was, and earlier versions are even more promotional than hers, so it needs to be recreated in accordance with the guidance I've given Jimfbleak - talk to me? 06:00, 5 September 2019 (UTC)

Hi Liz - I hope you may be able to help. I stupidly moved a page I was working on in Sandbox into the article section. I had not finished working on the content or confirmed the validity of the citations provided by the band I'm representing, so can understand it not being up to standard. Other artist pages were used as a template for the script, and it was definitely not my intention to use the Wiki platform as a promotional tool. I disputed the speedy deletion, and asked that the article be placed back in Sandbox mode so I may continue working on it, but now I can't find the person who actioned the decision to delete. I was not advised which sections of the article were seen as propaganda/promotional, or if only the citations were misleading. I intend on rebuilding the page in Sandbox mode with stripped-back information. When I am done, if I move to the article section, and you still feel it doesn't meet the guidelines, may I request the page be put back into Sandbox mode instead of deleted? I agree that is was correctly deleted; Wikipedia doesn't host advertising, and we're only interested in what independent sources have to say about the article subject not what the subject has to say about themselves, and when it comes to musical acts we only cover topics that meet Wikipedia's very specific criteria for inclusion. If you think you can improve this to Wikipedia's standards I can restore it as a draft for you to work on, but be aware that unless you can demonstrate that the group meets these specific criteria we won't host an article on it, and that all promotional language needs to be removed from the article before it's published as a Wikipedia article and that every claim needs to be cited to a reliable independent source. ‑ Iridescent 15:10, 5 September 2019 (UTC)

But I used text from the same source as europa.eu did, namely from w3c. W3c grants reuse by stating "Permission to copy, and distribute the contents of this document, or the W3C document from which this statement is linked, in any medium for any purpose and without fee or royalty is hereby granted". The other concern was that I used text from tudelft.nl. But I used text from the ebook "The Legal Aspects of Blockchain". I provided a link where you could request your own copy, but for your convenience, you can temporarily see the ebook here. As you can see on page 3 the ebook is under a Creative Commons license. I didn't tag your article, I just carried out the deletion. I am reluctant to restore any content that has been identified as a copyright violation and I am not up to speed on all the intricacies of permissions and licenses (as I should be). User:Jimbo Wales page protection

Not sure but on User:Jimbo Wales#You can edit this page! he suggests that his user page is open for anyone to edit...perhaps I'm misinterpreting it? (saw this dif). Than again looking though the edit history of the page there's been A LOT of vandalism, so maybe that's why there is page protection? Thanks. OkayKenji (talk page) 20:23, 10 September 2019 (UTC)

It's basically continuous vandalism and reverts of vandalism. I realize that he doesn't like it protected but when it is just "vandalism-revert-vandalism-revert-vandalism-revert" etc. etc., it is exhausting for other editors to police it. The protection is only for 3 days and any admin can lift it if they disagree. Hopefully, it will discourage the recent vandals for hanging around until it expires. Liz Read! Speedy deletion for Surly Squirrel (character)

Hello. I noticed that you deleted this article after it was tagged for speedy deletion for having no meaningful content. However, I remember seeing at least some information on there, such as the creator of the character, etc. I agree that the article was extremely short (one or two sentences), but I'm not sure how this meets the CSD. It didn't have enough meaningful content for an article in the main space of the encyclopedia. But it is perfectly fine to have this limited amount of content in a draft so I have restored it to Draft:Surly Squirrel (character) and will inform the article creator. It's a little surprising to me that you would speak up for such a weak article but you changed my mind. Maybe you can add some more substantial content to it. Liz Read! Category:Anarchist writers

Hi there, you nominated Category:Anarchist writers for speedy deletion because it's empty. The category was deleted by mistake last year and only restored yesterday after a deletion review; apparently it wasn't repopulated automatically when it was restored, so that will need to be done manually. Well, Jd4v15, if you created the category, you shouldn't remove the speedy deletion tag yourself but I don't think that's a big deal now that the category is no longer empty. After an empty category is tagged, it sits for 7 days before it it deleted in case it was emptied improperly. Looks like that has been taken care of. But thanks for letting me know. Dear Liz,

to start with kindly let me highlight that I'm a newbee at Wikipedia. While highly appreciating the good content, I'm still getting accustomed to the article requirements (whereas I am also closely studying the official guidelines).

You deleted my draft page on the German shipping company "Peter Döhle Schiffahrts-KG" with the reason „G8:Redirect to a deleted or nonexistent page“ which I frankly speaking don’t understand. Merely a citation of a publication on the company by an independent publishing house as well as a link to their corporate website was included in my draft. Furthermore, I would be happy to add some references like Financial Times, etc. and not only on this company, but actually others later on as well. But before preparing different drafts, I would like to know the exact requirements.

I think I deleted a broken redirect, I didn't delete your article. I think your article was moved (the page should state that) and then it was deleted by admin RHaworth on grounds that it was promotional. It will state this if you look at the deleted page. A broken redirect is just a redirect to a page that was deleted. You might contact RHaworth if you want more information. Liz Read! Talk! 16:31, 19 September 2019 (UTC)

Now that I'm no longer editing on my phone, I was able to look into this. On September 2, William2001 moved User:BulbousBow56/sandbox to Draft:Peter Döhle Schiffahrts-KG, leaving a redirect to that page from your sandbox. On September 12, RHaworth deleted Draft:Peter Döhle Schiffahrts-KG for the reason of G11: Unambiguous advertising or promotion. This action left a broken redirect at User:BulbousBow56/sandbox and I deleted that page on September 13. I hope this more complete explanation helps answer some of your questions. Liz Read!
