Yercaud is a Hill station in Salem District, in Tamil Nadu, India. It is located in the Shevaroys range of hills in the Eastern Ghats. It is situated at an altitude of 1515 metres (4970 ft) above sea level, and the highest point in Yercaud is the Servarayan temple, at 5,326 feet (1,623 m).

The total extent of Yercaud Taluk is 382.67 km2, including reserve forest. The entire Taluk is administered as a township. Yercaud also has a village council.

The 19th century British settlers in Salem found Yercaud. Salem District Governor Kak Burn introduced the fruits of coffee and apples. Yercaud, known as Ooty of the poor, is a paradise for the middle class people. There is an increasing number of tourists coming to Yercaud, where the shade of the trees, the breeze and the impact of the sun obscures the sun.

Yercaud, which is around 383 sq. Km and is surrounded by beautiful natural cliffs, is a popular tourist attraction. There are also parks for children to enjoy. You can take a bath in the Killiyoor Falls here. The Yercaud lake is filled with water that gives the water to the lake. The Mount Temple is one of the oldest and most famous shrines located at an altitude of 5342 ft above sea level. From the pakoda tip, the lower part of the area looks beautiful.

Tourists are of the opinion that traveling at a very low cost can be a source of happiness.

Climate

Winter starts in September and ends in January. In winter, the mountains are covered with mist. Temperatures range from 12 ° C to 24 ° C in winter and 16 ° C to 30 ° C in summer. The average rainfall is 1500-2000 mm.

Agriculture

Coffee plantations are the main source of income. The coffee planter was brought from Africa in 1820 by Mr MD Cockburn and planted on the Grange estate. Yala, star apple, fig, water apple, pear, banana, orange, guava, black pepper, cardamom etc. Sandalwood, Teak and Silver Oak are abundant.

Plants & Animals

The National Botanic Gardens are located in Yercaud. The total area is 18.4 hectares. The Botanic Gardens is home to over 3000 species of trees and 1800 species of plants. The park was set up in 1963. The insect eater pitcher is grown in the park. There are still hills and fauna in many parts of Yercaud.

Travel

Yercaud, one of Europe's Summer Mountain Resorts, was declared by the English government in 1862. Dougles Hamilton, a military officer, referred to the Madras government of Madras. In Europe, he explained that the arrival of Europeans, the mountain habitat of Yercaud, has grown into a summer habitat. Subsequently, in 1863, the English government issued 80 tourist attractions in the Sarvarayan mountain range. With this announcement, tourists from many countries of the world began to flock.

Yercaud Lake

Yercaud Lake is one of the largest lakes in Tamil Nadu. There is a fountain in the middle of the lake. Anna Park is near the lake. The park also has a small garden following the Japanese horticulture. The flower fair will also be held here in May.

Lady's Seat

It is located at a distance of 2 km from Yercaud. From here you can see the city of Salem with a telescope. You can also see the Salem bungalow glowing from the mountain at night. If the weather is perfect, you can even see the Mettur Dam from here.

Kiliyur Falls

Killiyur Falls is located at a distance of 3 km from Yercaud Lake. The best time to visit this place is during the rainy season.

Bakoda Point

From here you can see the city of Salem, and from here you can see the village of Kakkambadi. The people who lived here built a Rama temple with stones. Yercaud is one of the most popular places to visit.

Servarayan Temple

Situated at the top of the hill. Located in a thin cave, the temple is dedicated to Goddess Caveri and Servarayan.

Karadiyur View Point

It is located at a distance of 12 km from Yercaud.

Sri Lalita Tripura Sundari Temple

It is located in the village of Salem Nagalur in the Lalitha Tripurasundari Temple, 7 km away from Yercaud.

Nallur Falls

It is located in a village called Nallur, about 20 km from Yercaud. The best time to visit this place is during the rainy season.

Population

According to the 2001 census, Yercaud had 40,000 people. Aboriginal people live on 24.449. The majority of the population is indigenous.

Summer Festival

The summer festival is celebrated in May for 7 days. The festival will include a floral exhibition, a dog exhibition, a herbal exhibition and a boat race.

Transportation

Yercaud is 36 km from Salem. Buses are available from Salem to Yercaud all day. There are two roads from Salem to Yercaud.

1) Salem - Korimedu - Base - Yercaud (36 km). 2) Salem - Ayodhyaattinam - Kuppanur - Kottassade - Yercaud (46 km).

Sacred Heart Church, Yercaud

Stone-age implements have been found from the ancient shrine located near Shevaroy Hills ( also known as Shevarayan Hills ), which is about 5 km from the Yercaud lake.[2]

Yercaud is situated in Salem district, Tamil Nadu. The nearest city is Salem, 32 km away.TNSTC - Salem operates the buses from Yercaud to major cities. Alternatively, it can also be accessed from Dharmapuri via Kanavaipudur[5]. The nearest airports are Salem Airport at a distance of 38 km. The nearest railway station is Salem Junction – 38 km.
