Masaki Kobayashi
Hello Kudpung,
I don't know whom else to ask, the portion of this page https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Masaki_Kobayashi#Provenance is a machine translation from Japanese and doesn't make much sense. Is there any special way to tag it to bring this issue to people's attention? It's odd that nobody has noticed it. Please advise. Thank you. Philburmc (talk) 03:11, 1 December 2019 (UTC)
- Philburmc, thanks for the heads up. This was added in this edit by La marts boys who according to their talk page, has a troubled history of contributions with many warnings. This is indeed a machine translation - I assume as you say, from Japanese, and probably from the Japanese Wikipedia. As it stands, it is totally unsourced so it has no place in a bio, whether living or dead. As a translation, it is not attributed, and finally, the translation is so poor that it would need a complete rewrite by a bilingual to make any sense. I've taken it out. Unfortunately, protecting the page won't help against such editors, and fp would be too heavy-handed. I will leave a message for the editor and we'll see what happens. Do keep an eye on it and if any admin action is required, please let me know. Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 03:54, 1 December 2019 (UTC)
- Kudpung, Thank you very much for your help and advice. I checked - it was indeed machine-translated from the Japanese Wikipedia. Philburmc (talk) 14:56, 1 December 2019 (UTC)
Greetings
- Hello, I ran across your name when leaving a message to another editor. Comments you had made ("This doesn't impact my view of you as an admin...) made me think that editor was an Admin until I looked closer. This led me to your user page, I saw you were the Admin, also saw the quotes, and I wanted to state "thanks for those".
- Other than the accolades I would like to know if you would look at the "Article merge" discussion (above). I either did alright or need a fish-slap as an involved editor should not actually close a discussion. My rationale was provided, apparently not (hasn't been in months) controversial, and had I just agreed I could have boldly made the merge as uncontroversial. After reflecting I am not sure the direction was proper so won't do it again even if acceptable. Anyway, I just wanted to make sure I did things correctly. Otr500 (talk) 20:51, 1 December 2019 (UTC)

No matter what concoction is your favorite to imbibe during this festive season I would like to toast you with it and to thank you for all your work here at the 'pedia this past year. Best wishes for your 2020 as well K. MarnetteD|Talk 02:28, 18 December 2019 (UTC) |
- Thanks MarnetteD, and thank you for your monumental contribs to Wikipedia. Except for Western expats and the western shopping spree that has been adopted here, Christmas is very much a non event as it is not part of the Buhddist calendar in Thailand (where there are already more public holidays than in any other country). Personally, I don't drink much alcohol at all and I've never really understood why this season of the year should be a reason for anyone to drink more of it.
- That said, I really do enjoy Herrenhäuser pilsner beer which I practically 'grew up' with in Germany; I drink draft Guiness in England because I can't stomach that British beer. I'm dedicated to Lirac, Vacqueras, and Gigondas wines from my Côtes du Rhône homeland; Bailey's - because I get as much miniature bottles as I like free on Emirates, and I like a little known mixer, 'Southern', of Southern Comfort and Schweppes Ginger Ale which I discovered in a Jazz venue near Hannover way back in 1974.
- Here in Thailand I'll drink the occasional can or bottle of Beer Leo if I'm with friends - drinkable wine is just too expensive and too hard to get as visitors to Wikimania 2020 will soon find out. There you go. Cheers! Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 03:51, 18 December 2019 (UTC)

- I indulged myself on my 70th birthday this year on a bottle of CNDP (vinyards one mile up the road from my home in France), which I had bought in the duty free shop on the Laos border near my home here and laid down for a couple of years for the occasion. Not as sweet as 'Southern', but wonderfully dark and fruity, very heady at 15%, and really silky once those tannins had had time to break down. Try it MarnetteD - it's not so easy to get get Vacqueras or Gigondas in the USA, which are just as good but less expensive, but I did once find a bottle of similar but cheaper Cairanne in a small store in a Brooklyn side street which I enjoyed with DGG over dinner. I noticed you edited this talk page's headers recently and so I have a question for you...I went to check this talk page just now and was surprised to find out that AceAlen had deleted posts & threads off of the main talk and not moved them to the Archives. I'm going to move them to the Archives but as for the action...I don't quite know what to do about this but would like your thoughts on the situation. Thanks, Shearonink (talk) 01:27, 26 December 2019 (UTC)
- Shearonink, I have left an appropriate message at User talk:AceAlen. Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 04:10, 26 December 2019 (UTC)
- I went ahead and restored the deleted posts/threads to Talk:Old Orchard Beach, Maine/Archive 1 and left a notice about attribution on AceAlen's user talk. But have come across another issue of concern. This editor in the past has changed Wikipedia:Top 25 Report/July 2 to 8, 2017 and now he's changing Wikipedia:Top 25 Report/July 2 to 8, 2017 again. I had always thought the Top 25 pages were basically to be left untouched, like archive-pages. Am I wrong? Shearonink (talk) 01:51, 26 December 2019 (UTC)
- Shearonink, I'll leave you to decide whether or not in your opinion AceAlen's edits are appropriate - it's not mainspace and thus not an area I want to spent time analysing. However, if you feel the edits are getting particularly disruptive, ANI would be the right venue. Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 04:17, 26 December 2019 (UTC)
- Ok, thanks Kudpung for your thoughts - I just wasn't sure what to do, I guess AN/I is always possible in the end. I did post a query on the Top 25 Report's main talk page to see what their thoughts might be. If they don't have an issue with it then I don't either. Shearonink (talk) 04:24, 26 December 2019 (UTC)

Further education
Hi Kudpung, hope you had a good Christmas. I just wanted to ask you a question regarding further education. WikiProject Schools intro states that it includes further education but I've noticed many of the further education articles have WikiProject Universities on the talk page with some using Infobox university instead of Infobox school, shall I change them all? Steven (Editor) (talk) 20:16, 27 December 2019 (UTC)
- Hi Steven (Editor), The lede paragraph at WP:WPSCH (and its footnote) describes exactly what we cover. Created as a fork from Wikiproject Universities 14 years ago, it's possible that some non-university Tertiary education establishments are still using WikiProject Universities infoboxes and/or are listed in WikiProject Universities, but today this would of course be wrong. It would probably be a mammoth task to change them all now, and as a time vs benefit exercise, there are far more urgent tasks awaiting attention. It might surprise you that we don't actually know how many schools we have in our project. Many get created and escape the WP:SCH banner or don't have cats added by their creators or NPPers. Also, nowadays, although I fiercley defend notability for schools (until it is changed by a clear consensus), since the virtual explosion of articles from South Asia and the vast majority of new school articles now coming from there , Wikipedia is rapidly filling up with really non-notable school stubs from that region. There are two users who consistently attack innocuous school articles and take entire batches of them to AfD to the point of disruption, so its essential that coords have the ArticleAlertBot on their watchlists and participate objectively at all school AfDs in order to maintain the SNG which has been established by long precedent. It would also be good to see some more schools elevated to GA, and also get a couple of FA on board. I do indeed keep an extremely watchfull eye over WP:WPSCH but since John from Idegon and ClemRutter became coords, I no longer consider myself the lead coord so It's probably best to start discussions like these at WT:WPSCH, because I do note for example, that Clem is also giving the project an overdue overhaul, and John is still doing a lot of work despite being on a sabbatical from his coordship. Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 01:34, 28 December 2019 (UTC)
- 14 years ago, wowzers haha - you are absolutely right regarding the uncertainty of how many schools we have in our project; I have come across many that do not have the WikiProject Schools template which I have added but how many more are there is the question, including cats. I have also noticed the large increase in articles from the Asia region, most of the new articles I have moved to draftspace have come from that region and as you have said, filling up with non-notable school stubs. What I like about the school article guidelines is the part about avoiding stubs — I genuinely think it is unfair to create a stub and expect others to do it for you, I know this is a collaborative project, but at least the creator of an article should put some effort into it, my emphasis to any articles I make is to ensure it is a Start or a C minimum. Some of the school articles I had moved to draftspace have not been edited, it's like the creator has just abandoned it and looks like their only aim was to get a school listed on Wikipedia.
- I have noticed the sudden influx of school articles at AfD and it is disruptive, even though a discussion was initiated on one of the users talk pages, seems they have ignored it. Should a discussion at ANI be initiated? Also would it be a good idea to start redirecting problematic high school articles to their locality with the R from school template? I've been overhauling the WP:WPSCH pages which I hope you, John, ClemRutter like it, also I have created a new Recognized content subpage which is embedded on the main project page and updated by bot — far better than manual updating and there are more school articles than what was listed before, such as 300+ DYK's (the manual one had around 80). I must note all of these articles listed have the WikiProject Schools template on their talk, one issue I've noticed is the University of the South Pacific Solomon Islands that should not have this template - I'm not sure why an editor had redirected this which had sourcing and appeared in DYK to its main university article that is unsourced and none of the content was merged across? I'm going to undo this as it is an unexplained redirect and changed the schools template to the university one (the next bot update should remove this article from the list). Thoughts on this school
Hi Kudpung, Happy New Year and I have a question for you. I've been working substantially on this school in the hopes of getting a DYK in, I then had to expand it more in order to make it a 5x expansion which I have now done, pending current discussion. But would you say I'm ready to take this to GA? Please let me know, thank you Steven (Editor) (talk) 02:31, 1 January 2020 (UTC)
- I don't do DYK and don't even know how the system works. I realise you've put a lot of work into the article, but it seems to have been padded out with a lot of trivia. Sorry to say, but it's not an article I would take on for GA if I were asked to be the reviewer; notwithstanding, there's nothing to stop you trying, another reviewer might see things differently, and GA standards have certainly become less harsh since my time. For UK school GAs, see a couple I did at HCGS (a state sch.), and Malvern College, a leading independent. Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 02:47, 1 January 2020 (UTC)-
- I see, hmmm, I'll see what I can do and the problem with this school is finding sources to expand it, I have reached a dead end in terms of sources online (rest of the sources I've found are just minor events and individual student achievements), checked Google Books but nothing except a mention about it blocking "any sight of the railway line or diesel engine exhaust" and a former students time at the school. Some sections of the WP:WPSCH/AG are omitted as I'm unable to find information for this school/not applicable. I will see if there is anything offline and if someone has access to Newspapers.com if they can check that for me. Thank you for checking this Steven (Editor) (talk) 03:02, 1 January 2020 (UTC)

translation
Hey, Kudpung! I have some 13th century German I'm trying to get translated for Kifli:
dô brâchten im die pecken
chipfen und weiʒe flecken,
weiʒer dann ein hermelein.
Any chance you'd be able to help, or point me at someone else?
Thanks! --valereee (talk) 01:58, 2 January 2020 (UTC)
- Valereee it's either Old High German or Old Middle German and then possibly an Austrian dialect of it. I have a broad understanding of what it means but nothing you could use as a translation. Ask SoWhy. The last line is 'whiter than a hermelin'. A hermelin is a white weasel or stoat, or a white Czech cheese.Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 04:33, 2 January 2020 (UTC)
- Thank you! --valereee (talk) 04:39, 2 January 2020 (UTC)
- Yeah, it's supposed to be MHG, but Jans der Enikel may have written in a quite vernacular way. I really can't figure it out. I suppose "pecken" is a noun, plural, and the subject of the sentence, but who knows. Grimm's dictionary doesn't help much, not for "fleck(en)" either... Drmies (talk) 04:52, 2 January 2020 (UTC)
- I think it's a poem, so maybe it's playing with words? I find it hilarious that a hermelein is either a weasel or a cheese...I found another sentence, Bereits 1227 überreichten Wiener Bäcker dem Babenberger Herzog Leopold dem Glorreichen bei seinem Einzug in Wien zu Weihnachten eine Tracht „Chipfen“. that was machine translated to indicate that Duke Leopold moved to Vienna at Christmas, wearing a “chipfen” costume. Hm. He was dressed as a croissant? --valereee (talk) 06:08, 2 January 2020 (UTC)
- Just as a guess, but the Swedish for boy is pojke; 'the boy' is pojken; the girl is flicken. --Izno (talk) 13:13, 2 January 2020 (UTC)
- Ask Moonraker for (any) idiomatic translations. [1] - Vanillekipferl are traditional and still popular Christmas cookies, I'd guess the flecken is another one, perhaps made from eggwhite. Happy 2020 (musical card, and good for the year! --Gerda Arendt (talk) 13:57, 2 January 2020 (UTC)
Three of my articles
Hi. I'd appreciate it if you'd try to expand and improve articles, rather than just eagerly tagging them using the page curation tool. You tagged three of my articles, questioning if they pass notability. Consider looking them up online before you just assume they are non-notable. I don't even remember the last time I had one of my articles proposed for deletion, let alone tagged for notability. I do my research to ensure the subjects pass GNG and can be expanded. Thanks Missvain (talk) 02:05, 3 January 2020 (UTC)
- Missvain, no, that's not my job and please don't tell me what to do. Besides which, you've been around more than long enough to know exactly how to create articles. Indeed, my memory is excellent and tells me you are an experienced user and quite capable of doing that work yourself. One of the reasons your other articles probably get through NPP without being tagged or slated for deletion is that they look perfect and are not more closely examined examined by less experienced patrollers. I don't regularly patrol pages nowadays, but I wrote the book on it. Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 02:21, 3 January 2020 (UTC)
- that is an extraordinary response. I would consider all the articles you tagged should have gone to AFD. And *I* have been here since 2005 and consider myself to be very experienced. This is increasingly looking like wikistalking. I suggest you might want to consider taking a step back from what you are doing. - Chris.sherlock (talk) 19:39, 5 January 2020 (UTC)
- That sound like a classsic lack of AGF. I came across these edits in a single session of NPP, something I rarely do do nowadays. PROD is a much safer solution for the creator and much less burden on the community. The editor turned out to be not only highly experienced - over 1,000 articles created since 2006, an admin, and a former WMF employee. I would have expected better. You registred an account in 2016 in which year you made 3 edits and did not make a single edit until 3 years later . If you have other, older accounts, please declare them. Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 01:47, 6 January 2020 (UTC)
- They are well known. They are: User:Ta bu shi da yu, User:Tbsdy lives and User:Letsbefiends. I have already explained that you have not been following the spirit of PROD, and it is absolutely “your job” to check for notability before you tag an article. - Chris.sherlock (talk) 19:57, 6 January 2020 (UTC)

- A request for comment asks whether partial blocks should be enabled on the English Wikipedia. If enabled, this functionality would allow administrators to block users from editing specific pages or namespaces, rather than the entire site.
- A proposal asks whether admins who don't use their tools for a significant period of time (e.g. five years) should have the toolset procedurally removed.
- Following a successful RfC, a whitelist is now available for users whose redirects will be autopatrolled by a bot, removing them from the new pages patrol queue. Admins can add such users to Wikipedia:New pages patrol/Redirect whitelist after a discussion following the guidelines at Wikipedia talk:New pages patrol/Redirect whitelist.

Can you help
= I Don't know you can help or not but I believe that honesty exists in many people, so I dare to ask help. Can you help to reopen the article, Zarb-e-Sukhan of Ehsan Sehgal which was dishonestly removed, while it had multiple authentic sources, even though, ill motives contributors removed that unfairly. I found it on Google search - https://en.wikiredia.com/wiki/Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/Zarb-e-Sukhan. Please save Wikipedia from such ones. Thanks. More links - https://books.google.com.pk/books/about/Zarb_e_Sukhan.html?id=4EefUUpSomMC&redir_esc=y
1- https://www.conservapedia.com/Zarb-e-Sukhan 2 - https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/41438543-zarb-e-sukhan 3 - why wikipedia removed this article of notable person while it has multiple authentic sources, another encyclopedia has that. And also in the book, hundrends of reviews of the scholars and academics from around the world are included, no one any other book has that, is it not the ill-motives of bad contributors. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 196.194.208.220 (talk) 06:19, 6 January 2020 (UTC)
- This is rather a complex issue. First off, as clearly stated, I don't generally reply to unsigned requests, and much less to those of unsigned IP users (as far as I know , there is nothing that prevents users in Karachi from registering an account) because it makes it practically and technically impossible to communicate with you. You will need to discuss the AfD with the non-admin closer, Störm (formerly user:Greenbörg), who contrary to the claim on his user page, is not on Wikileave. You may also wish to get input from RoySmith, an admin, who apparently shed some light on the confusion. For my part however, that's as far as I will get involved. The actual AfD seems to have been illegally redirected to an external, 3rd party Wikipedia mirror. Hope this helps. Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 15:38, 6 January 2020 (UTC)
- This is the correct link to the AfD. My take on this is that there was nothing wrong with the AfD, so it was deleted (well, redirected) properly. Be that as it may, our standard practice is that anybody can write a new article on this subject, provided they address the issues raised at the AfD. In this case, the consensus was that the book failed to meet our notability guidelines listed at WP:GNG and WP:NBOOK. So, if you want to write a new article about Zarb-e-Sukhan, you're free to go ahead and do so, as long as you include appropriate sources that meet WP:GNG and/or WP:NBOOK. I do note that this book was apparently self-published. Technically, that's not a disqualifier for having an article about it, but as a practical matter, I think you'll find it difficult to convince your fellow editors that a self-published book is notable. -- RoySmith (talk) 17:18, 6 January 2020 (UTC)
Thanks, RoySmith, and Kudpung, for your reply and suggestions. As a team of journalists from Pak, we decide to add sources that are available and improve the article, even though, none of us has the experience, everyone does on its way, so do not confuse. We need help from experienced ones. As a fact, in this part of the world, each book is published under academic and literary organizations and none of those are famous as in the West, we do not recognize term self-publish. As far as, Zarb-Sukhan was published under various literary organizations, as mentioned in the book itself, having hundreds of reviews by Pakistani and Indian scholars and academics around the world, which are also mentioned in the book itself, and also several reviews on Zarb-e-Sukhan in big newspapers, and also reviews of other books that are included in this book, we are very junior journalists, never met with the author of the book. We do not know the rules, nor we stay here. We do not want to reveal our investigation, I hope you understand, and we try to summit again the same article, within your helping so that such ones abide to spoil articles on Wikipedia. You will notice differential in comments because of a team, the purpose is fairness and honesty. Sorry for our English language, and thanks once again.
