Gameplay

Brawl Stars is centered on shooting other players or, in some cases, AI opponents, to bring down their health and defeat them. Players can choose between several brawlers, each with their own main attacks. As brawlers attack and do damage to enemy brawlers, they build up a charge called "Super", which is often more powerful when unleashed. Each brawler also has two unlockable (passive) abilities called "Star Powers" that can be found in Brawl Boxes (the game's loot chests) or the in-game shop once the brawler is at maximum level. Additional brawlers can be obtained through chests that are rewarded throughout the game. In addition, it is possible to purchase “skins” in the shop, which may alter the appearance, animations or sounds of Brawlers.

Brawl Stars has a variety of different modes that players can choose from, such as Bounty mode, where 2 teams attempt to collect the most stars while eliminating their opponents. Heist mode has the teams attempt to crack each others safe while protecting their own at the same time. Gem Grab mode has one team collect 10 gems before the other team can, and the Showdown mode pits 10 players against each other as they attempt to be the last Brawler standing in a slowly shrinking arena. There is also powerplay where you have to use a maxed-out brawler. There is also Siege, where you try to get a robot to defeat your opponent's Ike. Ticketed modes are modes where you spend tickets to play a certain game mode. These modes include Robo Rumble, Boss Fight, and Big Game. Limited modes such as Graveyard Shift, Present Plunder, and Hot Zone are also available sometimes. Not all game modes are available all of the time.[2][3]

Development and release

The game design was influenced by popular multiplayer games such as Overwatch and League of Legends. The team wanted to create such a game that was designed with mobile devices in mind first. According to Supercell's Frank Keienburg " Our focus was on retaining a lot of depth while stripping away all the fluff." [4] Although the game contains some elements of the Battle Royale genre these were implemented before the genre as a whole took off and the team did not set out to make a game with those elements.[5]However, the team later decided to capitalize on the popular "every brawler for themselves" battle royale-esque gamemode, Showdown, by advertising Brawl Stars in the App Store as a "3v3 and Battle Royale" type game.[6]

The game is notable for its long soft launch period during which virtually every aspect of the game was changed.[7] Initially announced the game via a livestream video on June 14,2017[8] It received an iOS soft launch in the Canadian App Store the following day.[9] In total the soft launch would last a total of 522 days during which internally it was doubted whether or not the game would ever actually see a general release. [5] [4] Initially the game was played in portrait mode and had players tapping on the screen, this was changed eventually to players using analog controls and playing in landscape mode.[5][4] Other changes include changing the UI, changing the metagame and transitioning the game from 2D to 3D. [4] Supercell's Frank Keienburg attributes the difficult beta period to the developer working in a new genre where they "weren't sure how to interpret it's success."[5] The game was finally made available in Canada, Finland, Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Ireland, Singapore, Hong Kong, Macao and Malaysia App Stores on January 19, 2018. On June 26, 2018, Android received access to the game as a continuation of the soft launch.[10]

The game was released globally on December 12, 2018,[11] and made more than $63 million in its first month.[12]

Esports

Supercell announced the Brawl Stars World Championship on August 2019 with a prize pool of $250,000. The finals were held in South Korea. Nova ESports won on 2019's championship. Brawl Stars is currently getting ready for 2020 World Championships, which will have a prize pool of $1,000,000. [13]

Reception

Awards

The game was nominated for "Mobile Game" and "EE Mobile Game of the Year" at the 15th British Academy Games Awards.[14]
