Sophia Lillis (born February 13, 2002)[1] is an American actress. She is known for her role as Beverly Marsh in the horror films It (2017) and It: Chapter Two (2019), the feature film adaptations of Stephen King's 1986 novel of the same name, her role as young Camille Preaker in the HBO psychological thriller miniseries Sharp Objects (2018), and her role as Nancy Drew in the Warner Brothers film Nancy Drew and the Hidden Staircase (2019).

Background

Lillis was born in Brooklyn, New York to Juliana Mellevold (née Moday) and David Lillis. She is of Irish, Polish and Swiss-German descent.[2] She has a twin brother named Jake and a stepbrother named Philip. Her parents divorced when she was a child, and she lives with her mother and stepfather, Christopher Mellevold. Christopher sparked Sophia's interest in acting,[2] which she began when she was seven years old, taking classes at the Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute.[2]

Career

Lillis made her acting debut in 2014 with the film A Midsummer Night's Dream and later she starred in the film 37.[2]

In 2017, she made a breakthrough when she costarred as one of the leads, Beverly Marsh, in the horror film It, an adaptation of Stephen King's novel, directed by Andy Muschietti, and also starring Jaeden Martell, Finn Wolfhard, Wyatt Oleff, Bill Skarsgård, Jack Dylan Grazer, Jeremy Ray Taylor and Chosen Jacobs.[3][4][5] Later that year, Lillis also played one of Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard's children in Sia's music video, "Santa's Coming for Us".[6]

Lillis was cast in the HBO's television miniseries Sharp Objects (2018), in which she played the young version of Camille Preaker, played by Amy Adams as an adult.[7] Lillis also starred as famous literary sleuth Nancy Drew in the Warner Bros. film adaptation of Nancy Drew and The Hidden Staircase, which opened March 15, 2019 to generally good reviews with particularly positive notes in regards to Lillis' performance.[8][9] Later in 2019, Lillis reprised her role as Beverly Marsh in It: Chapter Two, released on September 6.[10] In October 2018, Lillis concluded shooting in Dublin, Ireland for Gretel & Hansel, a re-imagining of the German fairy tale Hansel and Gretel.[11] Gretel & Hansel was released on January 31, 2020.[12]

Upcoming

Lillis is set to star, alongside Naomi Watts, as a character named Celia in Claire McCarthy's The Burning Season,[13] as well as a character named Ally in another film titled Before I Sleep.[14]

Lillis is set to appear, alongside Paul Bettany, in an independent film by True Blood and Six Feet Under creator Alan Ball. The film is titled Uncle Frank and is set in 1970s New York City.[15] It was shot in Wilmington, North Carolina from April to May 2019.[16] On June 10, 2019, it was announced that Lillis was cast as the lead role of an upcoming Netflix original series titled I Am Not Okay with This, which began filming that same month in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The series is scheduled for release sometime in 2020.[17]
