"I'm Alive" is a 1996 song recorded by London-based DJ/Producers Silvester Stretch (Stuart Collins) and Jules Vern (Julian Peake). The single uses a sample from the 1979 song "Boogie Wonderland" by American R&B band Earth, Wind & Fire, featuring The Emotions[1] and 'The Vision' by Prophecy feat. Africa True[2]. It peaked at number 6 on the UK Singles Chart and at number-one on the UK Dance Singles Chart, and was also featured on Coca-Cola advert campaigns. In other European countries, "I'm Alive" peaked at number 21 in Ireland, number 23 in the Netherlands and number 29 in Sweden. On the Eurochart Hot 100, it reached number 16. Outside Europe, the song peaked at number 2 on the Billboard Hot Dance Club Play chart in the US and at number 65 in Australia. A black-and-white music vide was made to accompany the song. British electronic dance and clubbing magazine Mixmag ranked it at number 28 in its list of the best singles of 1996, Mixmag End of Year Lists:1996.[3]
In 2011, Ministry of Sound re-released "I'm Alive" with new remixes from Louis La Roche, Tom Starr & Drum & Bass powerhouses Bcee & Mr Mess.[4]
Critical reception
Billboard described the song as a "quirky dance twirler" and explained further that "this track is rife with the kitschy allure of a novelty hit". They noted that Stretch & Vern "fashion a jittery disco beat beneath a tongue-twisting female rap".[5]
