Character biography
Effron the Sorcerer is not the most famous of the Superman villains, but he may be one of the most diabolical. He appeared out of a fiery pit in the ground, surprising Superman at every turn. Effron commanded an army of faceless puppets, and threatened to turn Superman, as well as the rest of Earth's inhabitants, into faceless puppets to add to his growing army. In addition to clashing with Superman, he has battled Green Arrow as well.
Effron has appeared in:
- World's Finest Comics # 210: "World of Faceless Slaves!"
- Action Comics # 437: "Magic Bustin' Out All Over"
- Superman # 268: "A Wild Weekend in Washington"
- Superman # 273: "The Wizard with the Golden Eye"
The story behind the story
DC Comics writer Elliot S! Maggin was a student at Brandeis University. He was friends with Mark Effron, whose younger brother Eric is managing editor at The Week magazine. One day Mark's father, Irving, visited campus. Effron the Senior (Irving, versus Effron the Sorcerer) was -- and is -- a bigger-than-life, stocky, sturdy, stick-in-your-eye ex-Marine. Maggin was taken by the senior Effron and told Mark he planned on using his father as a villain in an upcoming series of comics he was planning starring both Green Arrow and Superman.
