Early Business Career

Matthew was a personal member of the London Stock Exchange, and a director of stockbroking firm Quilter Goodison up until 1987. Orr was responsible for the expansion of share shops in Debenhams department stores.[1][2] In 1986 he was head-hunted to run Debenhams investment services and became Director of Burton Group Financial Services.

Orr is a former member of the IFS School of Finance, where he sat on the board of Governors. In addition, he is as a former chair of the IFS Proshare faculty. He continues to chair WoFED, a group he initiated to develop ideas for Workplace Financial Education. As chairman of Proshare, Orr oversaw the acquisition by the institute of financial services. Orr was a founder and vice chairman of the Money Channel. [3] He is an original backer of Seven Investment Management (the multi-manager) that was subsequently sold to Threadneedle (the asset management company).

Killik & Co

In 1989, along with Paul Killik, he co-founded Killik & Co, one of the UK's leading private client investment houses, and was its Managing Partner and Chief Executive until 2006.[4] Killik & Co is a British retail investment company and independent Partnership. It provides advice on savings, planning and investment to retail investors through a network of branches in the UK, managing assets on behalf of 27,000 clients. [5]

It is one of the few remaining independent Partnerships in the UK retail investing market following consolidation amongst European, Japanese and American investment banks following the Big Bang in the late 1980s. The banker ship is formatted around a number of pavement retail outlets to provide a personal advisory service to clients from the day they first walk through the door. [6] Killik&Co have won multiple awards, including 2015 Wealth Manager of the Year and Best Full Self Invested Personal Pensions Provider by the Financial Times Investors Chronicle [7] and 2015 Best Compliance Professional by the City of London Wealth Management Awards. [8] Orr remains a founding partner.

He was also an initial financial backer of the multi manager 7IM which was subsequently sold to asset management company Threadneedle.[citation needed] Although he remains a founding partner of Killik & Co[citation needed], he and his film producer wife Sybil Robson Orr started the documentary and feature film production company Robson Orr Entertainment[9] and Spark, a film distribution business[citation needed].

He continues his entrepreneurial interest through advising and investing in new and developing companies. In 1996 he co-founded Sharegift, the UK-based charity share donation scheme,[10] with Lady Claire Mackintosh. Orr and Mackintosh were awarded the Beacon Fellowship Prize in 2006[11][12] for their efforts in venture philanthropy.
