Respect is an upcoming American biographical drama film directed by Liesl Tommy. It is based on the life of singer Aretha Franklin, and stars Jennifer Hudson in the role. Forest Whitaker, Marlon Wayans, Audra McDonald, Marc Maron, Tituss Burgess, Tate Donovan, and Mary J. Blige also star in supporting roles. The film is scheduled to be released theatrically on October 9, 2020 in the United States.

Production
The project had been long in development, with Jennifer Hudson set to play Aretha Franklin. Franklin herself was involved with the development up until her death on August 16, 2018.<ref[https://variety.com/2018/music/news/aretha-franklin-films-biopic-amazing-grace-jennifer-hudson-1202909105/</ref> In January 2019, Liesl Tommy was set to direct the film.[1] The rest of the cast was added in October 2019, including Forest Whitaker, Marlon Wayans, Audra McDonald and Mary J. In a June 2019 slate deal, MGM added Bron Creative as a co-financing and producing company to this film.[3] Filming began in Atlanta, Georgia on September 2, 2019,[4] and wrapped on February 15, 2020.[5] MGM's President of the Motion Picture Group, Jonathan Glickman, exited the company on February 1, 2020 with a first look deal starting with this picture.[6]
Release
It is scheduled to be released on October 9, 2020.[7] It was previously scheduled to be released on August 14.[8]
